I would hazard a guess and say that that's a bug, or "unintended feature" of the vBulletin forums.

I think you missed what Stu was saying Nark.

Have a look at the words above his post - " editing titles bug bug "
Now the name of this thread is - " editing titles bug "

He is saying we can't change the title of a thread to include "Now with pics!!" or "Updates!!" like we used to be able to.

Other VB forums I'm on are identical to this.
And its HIGHLY annoying not being able to change the title of a thread.

Yeah the way it works is that users are able to moderate their posts but the title is a thread attribute which isn't edittable by users, this is available to be editted in the thread tools when you are logged on as a moderator.

It is a bit wierd really. I'll see if there is a way to configure it to have users able to change the thread title itself rather than just the post title.

That would be great, its a function that I would say is required in the Classifieds section.

OK I've had a look at this and it's a little strange.

There is a configurable variable for how long after starting a thread a user is able to edit the title of the thread they created. The problem is that you have to specify this in minutes and there is no option for disabling it, or setting it to infinite, built in to the software. What I have done is configured this to allow the thread title to be editted for 90 days.

I have a feeling that keeping track of this for every single thread in the forum may well end up being a bit of a performance and storage issue. I'll keep looking to see if there is a code change for this available but if not then it will have to be monitored for it's impact on the forum performance.

have we asked the v-bull guru's forum thingy about this?
I do tend to agree with you Josh. Being that there is a timer setting for editting thread titles, i tend to think that when each thread is created a sub-program would be created and pointed to that thread which has a countdown timer and a string allowing user editting of the thread title.....

The question is.... does that countdown thing run independantly to the thread, or does it become part of that thread's functionality?

Of course this is important, because if we are getting like 30 threads created a day, then in the space of 90 days we would have about 2700 threads at any one time which have their countdown still active. Thus if each countdown were a class unto itself then it may cause memory and performance issues, as you suggest Josh. At the same time though, the programmers could have been cluey, thinking this might be the case and making these countdowns very memory efficient, perhaps having one main task that holds pointers to each of the "actively edittable" threads, and closing their edittability when the time is right..... or were they narrow minded and just chucked this "countdown" thing in as an afterthought, where each new thread has its own separate task, which is continously active whilst the countdown is running.
....im sure you understand what im vaiguely getting at with my basic knowledge of C and Java, and my lack of using correct terms.....

... it's all depending on how the software was written really, so without the expertise or experience backing us up, it's really a case of wait and see.

Personally i would prefer not to wait and see..... i dont want anyone to be answering the same question 40 times a week, "why doesnt my thread title change??".... but you are far more knowledgeable in these areas......... i should shuttup now
    ...... butt scratcher?!
