Just take your work laptop home and tune with it.

Or even buy/scrounge/borrow a super cheapo, old laptop. Old ones will definitely have a serial port and the software doesn't really require any computing power.

Thanks for all the hints guys,i am not allowed anymore to use the company one "dont ask" and not sure if its the USB to serial adapter that is to blame.

How do i tell short of buying one and trying it.

You can get the USB serial adapter to work, I use mine with a serial adapter. Probably the best bet is to look up the company that makes your adapter and see if they have some software on the net. Once you have that installed it will come up in hardware config and you can set which com port to use.
