Default WTF, my brake pad fell out, ***happened again, cressida PROS wanted***

i was on my way home from the drags theother night{numerour 100mph+ runs} trying to catch my missus who was in our other car, i was doing 150 a few times.
got off the motorway and was sitting at the lights when i gave the brakes a bit more pressure and brought up the revs to just slightly put the car sideways { i was currently sitting behind my wife} when all of a sudden i heard a bang and my brake pedal hit the floor, no brakes.

    i managed to rip the handbrake up before i hit my other car {interesting insuranse claim }
I pulled over and looked for a burst pipe or any fluid leak, nothing, but the brakes were still fucked, so i pumped them a bit, nothing. I drove the last 2k home really slow so i could use the handbrake. got home and pulled my wheel off, WTF, my outer pad was gone, as were the 2 clips that push the pads away from the rotor when not being applied.
so i went for a drive intheohter car to find the pad, found it, about 5m away from where the pedal went down

took the pad home and put it back together, trying to work out why it happened, put it back together without the clips and the pad fell out again.

Took me a while to work out what had happened.
When the previous owner had gotten some pads put in, the installer must've put the new "scraper" clips in with them u get with genuine pads. but it turns out u can put the top clip in the bottom and vice versa, which makes the little part of the clip that is supposed to support the pad face the wrong direction, so when the pads are new and thick, its not a problem, but when the pads wear down a bit, the pads are just thin enough to fall out.

So if anyof you are gonna pull your brakes apart, be very careful, as the tiniest little thing can be very catastrophic.

150 few times, eh? On public roads?

Sideways? Doing a bit of dorifto on the publics roads?

Good point about checking your brakes. You're very lucky when the brakes failed the only car you could of hit would of been your other car, instead of taking out some innocent party.

These forums don't condone reckless driving on public roads, nor the tales - no matter how interesting or informative - about such driving.

Having said that, I'm glad that you weren't hurt and the cars weren't damaged and I assume a lesson well learnt.

I had a brake pad slip out on my Mazda RX2 some years ago. I think it was a combination of the pad being almost worn out and the disk being worn as well so the moral of the story is keep your pads and disks in good condition.

Must have been the 'cooler dose' going through the booster!

But seriously... I'd definately be checking the rotor thickness.
The gap between the rotor and the bracket gets too big, allowing the pads to fall through.
Glad you werent hurt, it could have been very dangerous!
    Cheers

not a problem with the pads or rotors, the person who put the pads in last time fucked up, plain and simple, but once the pads were able to get to about 60%, they were thin enough to fall out the gap, which shouldnt have been there.

i wasnt gonna skid, i was just going to make the ass end move over a few inches

I don't know what you've got, but I've never seen any design
that was totally dependent on the anti-squeel/rattle shims/clips to retain the pad. They usually are 'extras' only and aren't there to 'push the pad away from the rotor when not being applied'.
I think you've got another problem - wrong pads or wrong caliper & bracket. They should never be able to drop out unless worn out completly, plus a VERY worn disk.
