Default At what temp should i be worried?

Hey all i have a Gz10 soarer that used to have a 1G-GEU and now has a 1G-GTE. I did however keep the old radiator. I usually when i hit it, it is only short bursts. My car will usually sit at about 90 deg and never move when i drive around.

I have however been doing a few hill climbs where I have found i have been on about 5PSI or so to keep momentum. If doing this for a while (like when your climbing a hill) i have found my gauge starts to creep up (which i guess is understandable since turbo's produce heat). My aftermarket temp gauge goes red at 100 deg and i have seen it hit that a few time now, this is usually when i get concerned and possibly try to drive it on less boost.

All that aside the point of this is really at what temp should i be concerned for the well being of my motor, and is it possible my radiator can handle it once it hits 100 deg or would it be more likely that i try to drive it a little less hard.

are well sounds to me like your radiator isn't quite up to the task of keeping your motor cool.

When finished my conversion I used the halfcut radiator, which turned out to be %80 blocked, my temp guage would go to the red after boosting. But for the first day of driving i didn't have the temp guage hooked up and gave the car a royal flogging of hard driving. Motor seems ok still.

yeah k. I sorta thought that 100deg would be alright, i am just wondering if there is a temp i shoudl start getting worried at.

yeah it's ok as in won't cuase damage to your motor, but i'd think to keep it as close to the opening thermostat temp as possible especially with summer on its way.

Could very well be normal after boosting to get your coolant upto 100 degrees, hoping someone else can chime in with this. Both the turbo's i've owned would go up a level on the stock digital temp guage of the surpa after boosting for abit but apparently the red area of the temp guage where it's dangerous is around 100C-105C.

given that the radiator is well into its lifespan - i'd get it flushed - and if required, re-cored.

a cooler thermostat will not get around the fact that the radiator isn't doing its job ... and the rising temps on increase in car-abuse does suggest it's not that well.

btw, now (rather than mid-december) is the time to sort this out :-)

rip it out yourself, take it somewhere (is a 1/2 day job) then refit and do skids!!1!

90 is the optimal temp for engine wear.
In the old days 80 was thought to be best.
Assuming that your head gasket is in good nik, sneeking up 100 sometimes should be ok,but as the other guys have said get that radiator cleaned out.It willbe the best $60 you will ever spend.

Yeah ok, It did get ripped out not too lang back and repainted, and i have noticed it has a few small leaks so it would probably be good to get it fully reco'ed. Cheers

If Peewee's car is anything to go by, the Z10 engine bay isn't the kindest to airflow. Even with an intercooler in front of my factory radiator, and having 17-18psi shoved down it's throat, my temps stayed a lot lower and more consistent than his.

Yeah i found its not that nice, i was thinking in doing some sort of reverse bonnet scoop but instead removed a small portion of rear rubber bonnet seal and it has allowed a bit better flow

I have. The engine bay is pretty woeful of pulling hot air out of it too!

Perhaps, even Coff33's temp gauge moved around a lot more than mine though, and frontal wise his would've been similar to yours.

every MZ10/MA61 i've seen has had the under-tray removed (from underneath the forward portion of the engine bay) - doing this tends to fuck with the airflow coming out of the radiator.

It's not that the engine bay in both has poor air flow - it's that with air coming into it from every direction, it makes it difficult for air to flwo thru the radiator.

Put the tray back on (or something that does a similar job), make sure the front lip seal on the bonnet is mating with the top of the radiator/support panel ... then measure temps.
