Check out phobia's corona. If you are going to stuff around with a 22re, thats the way to do it. Just clean up the ports. I wouldn't worry about anything serious unless you were trying to get astronomical power. For a relatively cheap kick in the pants, headwork isn't too much of an issue in the world of forced induction.
Nikita the RA23 is almost finished.
Ok, I was always under the impression that the 22RE head was very restrictive (from what I've read).
Thanks again people.
You are quite correct; the 22R-E head is specifically designed to generate maximum torque at low RPM, which means peak airflow is going to be piss-poor. This is why they don't like to rev, they just can't breathe at high RPM. Notice how ALL of the built 22R's in the US have 20R heads, no-one bothers trying to make power with a 22R head.Originally Posted by Hibino
My suggestion: either get your hands on a 20R head somehow, or just abandon this idea. Much as I like trying to do something different, you're simply going to be disappointed with the results if you go down this road.

I'm not after massive numbers but. It's only going to be 6psi or so. Just want it to actually make power above 4 grandprobably to like 5200 or something.
Aren't 20R heads different to '85 22R heads? as in compatability wise?
sorry for all the questions.
Oh and if I don't go 22R it's going to be poo-poo nissan power (SR20). So shouldn't you be encouraging me to stick with toyota![]()

Guys, you’re quite welcome to have a look at my 22R-E build. There is plenty of potential in the old truck motor, it just takes a fair wack of cash to release it.....and that’s doing most of the work yourself.I love anyone that is willing to give the unknown a go, so I wish you well. The guys on this forum, like most people, know that the 22R is not the first choice for a turbo application and through good cause, they just don’t have a top end and can’t flow enough. But if you’re keen, go for it, respect will be at the other end if you pull it off.

Thanks mate. Yeah after seeing my brother turbo'ing his car I was inspired to do the same. He had fantastic results with his car (gogo SOHC falcon motors) and while yes, It's a completely different engine, the theory behind it is the same
22R-TE will dominate at QR drift events next year haha![]()
As for the potential I won't even be scraping the surface. Not so much after massive power as broad powerband and reliable, consistant power.
Plenty strong bottom end mate, so you'll be right. Good luck with it all and keep us all posted.![]()

As you read in my thread, im doing the SR20 idea.. BUT i might add, the 22re with a small turbo on it would go alright, nothing over a t25. Low boost with timing retarted and if you can run it more rich, it would go fine. Let me know if you do go through with it, im keen to see results!
Wes.
Bitch, come over here and have sex with Charlie Murphy..
Im Rick James bitch!
i wouldnt run over say 8psi with an un-opened motor (all stock in other words) and stock pistons. If you were chasing huge power id say replace the pistons with forged units and perhaps some h beam rods - but no need here![]()
you'd probably find you could get some really decent power on stock internals, i'd check out Toysport... as far as i know they're one of the pioneers on 22R development... we got this bible at home for our 22R build up... i think it's likely to be the slowest engine build up ever... 10ys so far... and head is still off![]()

I've gone the girly way out guys I'm sorry
Just going to clean up the ports and put a slightly larger cam in.
Spend a lot on suspension then drift the crap out of it until it blows up then put in an SR20![]()
You may flame me now.
hahahhaha... blow up a 22R... yeah... good one... there's a reason they're a truck engine![]()
