start from whatever detects the rpm signal, and then work backwards...
not knowing anything about them at all, either the rpm detection is dead, or the signal from it to the ECU (or ignitor if no ECU) is dead, or the igniter is dead, or the coil is dead.... or there is a loose wire somewhere, so get out the multi and make sure you have both voltage and earth where you think they should be...
you could even try reseating stuff that earths to the body perhaps..

small square thing is balast resistor?

check voltage to coil. check voltage to ignitor..
it has a dizzy? check it is ok, and still turns adn so on...

The small thing next to the coil is ceramic with a metal coil underneath? As stu said thats the balast resistor. This will drop the voltage to the coil.

Piss it off and get a non resistive coil (usually a gt40 not gt40r for example).

Anyway, this should have power to and out of it. But being efi (guessing since it's 91) is probably an ignitor. Check power supply to ecu, is fuel pump running? if not then you probably have a power supply problem higher up the chain.

Is it the V6 model? The Mazda engines of this era in V6 form are notorious for ignitor / distributor problems. I know because my last V6 mazda's coil packed it in while driving it home after handing over cash for it.

Definately sounds like a supply to the ign system problem then. Shouldn't be too expensive, as long as your original or replcement ignitor/coil are ok.

Well in turns out the Timing belt packed it in..
The mechanic was nt sure if this caused bent valves and generally rooted head or vice versa.
Anyhow the car is now for sale.....
