Now that sounds good jonra23. Bury the instructions on how to get access to the forum so you have to search for it!
Just on the reading the rules bit Corner-carvers has a novel way of dealing with it.
When you apply for forum mebership all you can access is the FAQ and forum rules, in the bottom of the forum rules is a codeword that you have to include in a pm to get accepdted, therffore no read rules no get get accepted.
This is not written or mentioned anywhere else so unless you can be bothered reading the forum rules of your own accord you never get joined up.
would probably be easily implemented and may stop some dumb questions.
regards
jon

Now this is the attitude that I have a problem with. I have no problem with paying members getting more privileges, however the complete dismissal of forum members as second class citizens is just wrong. Without the forum members input there is a fair chunk of the beloved technical resource that would not exist. And despite what some say the forum IS a big part of Toymods. Maybe the paying members need to recognise that a little more.Originally Posted by TheToyman75

I am a non paying forum member and have access to this forum at the discretion of the Toymods Membership. Must do something about that.
Therefore I have no input into and no grounds to gripe about the rules of this forum (Which I think are quite reasonable). I have a choice, if I don't like it I can f@#$ off.

ok guys If you really want to get technical... there is only 1 privilelge that the financial members get that the others don't (to start with anyway) and that is to have a say (and be heard) in how this club is run.... and for that priviledge it costa us $40 a year ( or $50 to join.)
jonRA23.
I do actually like this idea ALOT. It would have to be hidden amoungst the rest of the rules though or it would get to easy to "find" and I also think it would need to be changed quiet often.

I think things are very well run as is. Yes, there is some crap, but a quick look elsewhere on the net shows haw bad thing usually are.
Two points which may help are Jon's idea above with a hidden codeword in the rules, and also sending new members an email similar to their activation email, say, 1 day after they join.
This email can explain that what the forum is for and how sometimes new members should be careful to get a feel for the place before posting. Sure it will be restating the rules, but I feel people are more likely to read an email than read the rules. Plus reinforcement always helps.

The rules of some of the forums are very similar to Toymods, the layout of the forums is very similar with Non car sections etc. the moderation is more relaxed and there are more flame wars and a hell of a lot of posting in the wrong sections that is let go but mainly by newbys.Originally Posted by XR Pilot
The only conclusion I can come to is that the people on these forums don't follow the rules and therefore the rules are posted as a reminder. As opposed to the alternative for repeat offenders as per the old forums.

I can understand that the running of the forums is definitely a drain on the resources of the club.... and the reputation system is in place to limit the amount of sh*t flowing through the forums.
But with that said system in place, I cannot see the value of limiting the viewing ability of guests on these boards.......if they cannot post, what damage can be done?

-It is new we decided to do this last night at the board meeting. The thinking is that we want to attract the kind of people that want to contribute or be helped by what the forum and club have to offer and we figure that the stuff being made available to them without registerring is what they need to see to make a decision.-
I'll leave this one alone now!!!
There is method behind or madness, we haven't made any rules without a valid reason.

Hi,
I've been reading this thread with much interest. I have been visiting this site for some time to see where it was heading before making a real commitment as I wanted to join a club that was focused on what I believe is at the heart of most enthusiasts (technical information, peoples experiences and sharing knowledge about Toyota's in a positive friendly and mature environment). I have to say that I have been impressed by the level of technical and historical knowledge of individuals that post on the forum. I'ts great. This is a quality site.
I say most enthusiasts because you cannot please everyone all the time when setting standards or shaping the direction of a club and rules are a necessary requirement to support/enforce these aforementioned things.
There will always be people that want things their way or done differently, and yes they can express their opinion but ultimately it is the boards decision as to what may change in the best interests of the club and it's members.
It takes time, effort, thought, discussion and conviction to go in the direction that the board/moderators are heading and I applaude them for that.
So, in my view keep up the good work and the cheque is in the mail as they say.
Regards,
Don
