    Jeremy,
A multi layer steel gasket is certainly the next best option.
We have recently been trying a very similar style to the one in the Ebay photo. After a few hard hours on the dyno its still holding up. But i cannot say how much boost they will handle.

Just make sure you dont use a copper one without O-rings.

I thought that a multi layer steel HG was designed to work on its own as it has crush rings in it to act like O-rings would into a copper HG.

But can somone confirm this as I am looking favourably upon the steel HG i linked to in above post.

    Cheers,

    Jeremy

from memory, my mates bike had a multilayer steel headgasket... near the cylinder it had a small area (ring.. sayy 3mm?) bent up to effectively add more pressure to help sealing..
combined with hylomar, he never had leaks.

o-ring is designed to give a small protrusion from the block that will bite into the copper headgasket and give a positive seal... kinda like a tupperware seal on a smaller scale. it MUST bite into and deform the headgasket to seal.

if o-ring doesn't deform, and headgasket (steel) doesn't deform.. how is it going to seal effectively? unless you are very lucky and your o-ring, groove and head all have to exact sizes/thickness etc.... not likely

the amount of bending of a head/block is so small it cannot take up imperfections in the sealing surfaces, which is why normal gasket, or copper+o-ring is used (or steel for ease of re-using), to take up imperfections, ie give like interference fit between the parts....
it's all about taking up imperfections.
with o-ring, you are giving a small area (ie contact area) with high pressure, which is why it seals so well.
normal gasket/steel gasket have the sealing surface over a larger area, and so the actual sealing pressure (in terms of force per area) is much lower, and so less cylinder pressure is required to cause leaking.. which is why an o-ring with not enough protrusion/bite seals worse...

    just a thought or two..

I am favouring a Cometic Multi Layer Steel HG atm from more discussions with people, i just think that a copper HG with O rings will be no good for the street daily.

Thanks Old one for your response, I thought you were a doctor, not a mechanic, should i disregard yourpost??
