strange pinging like noise

hey peoples just after a bit of advise.

88 celica with 3S-GE

recently my engine bay has started to make a pretty harsh wierd metalic rattle type pinging noise. it sort of comes and goes randomly....happens worst at cold start. and it'll also happen if i plant my foot from just cruising at 2.5k mainly in 4th and 5th.

it doesnt really seem to cause and performance loss and its kind of got me stumped.

i've tried to listen where its coming from but its kind of hard to tell. sorry about the vauge description. might try and record it tomorrow.

the only issue the car has at the moment is a pretty severe leak coming from power steering.

could anyone describe the sound a bent vavle might make?

anyone suggest where i should start my search for the noise.

What oil are you using? Have you checked your oil level? Which oil filter?

oil is valvoline or penrite...20W - 50W...can't remember which filter. was going to change both soon anyways (not far off the 5000k's oil change)

hey dood, do an oil change ASAP, and collect the oil see if theres any metal chards or anything within it, so you can start to eleminate certain things.

Does it use oil? It sounds like its running low, definately get out there and check your dipstick level.

Could it just be a harmonic rattle in something like an exhaust heat shield? My heat shield in the 102 vibrates like a bastard at 3000rpm WOT in 3rd, 4th and 5th, but doesn't when cruising or slow acceleration. It's missing a bolt or two, so so I've tried re-arranging the other ones and tightening them up, but no love yet

Nuh, can't be arsed, it'll get done eventually but it doesn't bother me (I don't go full throttle in 4th or 5th much anyway)

i think i have that same heatshield problem...

We seem to get the same problem on the SAE car too, with heatshield for the muffler tending to sing in 4th, 5th and 6th at around 11-12,000 rpm. Then again, it has a tendency of ripping out rivets and bolts anyway because the rear end vibrates so much (thats solid engine mounts and a motorbike engine for you)

If it was a harmonic rattle then it would only rattle at certain speeds, or possibly at a constant acceleration. If it is not at a specific speed then it won't be a harmonic rattle. As you say it comes and goes randomly, I think you can eliminate this a your problem.

However you should definitley replace the bolts. If you don't, you run the possibility of the remaining bolts breaking under larger loads than normal from the vibrations.

I'd be doing an oil change asap.

Do you have a timing light? Check the base timing if you haven't already, and if no love found there go looking for exhaust leaks.
