On many standard 4AGZE's, or more so standard ECU'd 4AGZE's they suffer the dreaded 5500rpm drop off. This has been trced back to the knock sensor being set off by the harshness of the engine and ancilleries. The knock sensor will then tell the ECU there is something wrong, as it should, and the ECU will compensate its tune accordingly hence the loss of power.

There are a few ways to fix this problem and such companies as HKS make aftermarket knock sensors that are more tolerent. Aftermarket engine management will sort this out also.

As you stated earlier in the thread Koffee, sometimes it does't occur. I have found this also with friends ZE.

If you need some more info PM 'inertia', although he may see this thread soon.

I'm still trying to work out exactly what's causing it. As jez stated some trace it to the knock sensor being too sensitive, others to intake temperature, others even say that it is a protection feature and that it'll do the 5500rpm retard for 15mins after engine start...

Trying to track down the part # of the knock sensors to use. I know that the gze ones are specific to the generation of GZE and aren't interchangeable...

I have an ARC topmount, and whilst its better than the stock topmount, it still suffers and you can really feel a large performance increase on a very cold night. I'll be looking into a W2A or frontmount setup... though I want to keep my aircon... .

i was happy with it's output til redline when it was gze with just a 160mm crank pulley (max ~10psi).
back when i 1st went gte there wasnt 'that' many around so thought i would give it a go, now days i think it's rare if you have a gze with the s/c still hanging off it.......

serously i dont find mine drops off at all, id suspec you have another issue in ther.. go get the computer before the cams that will/should sort out any mystery electronic issues thats cassuing it.. most likely the computer pulling the timing out from the knock sensor going off.

If you bought each part individually like i did it can be a long and drawn out process

    cooler
    pump
    copper piping
    radiator
    tubing
    custom cooler piping

, but if you got the kit, you could whack it all together in an afternoon, and that pwr barrel would fitr alot easier than the subaru unit

it would want to for that price!

Im not sure though the PWR barrel is quite small and Im not confident it woul,d be that good at cooling.
