with concern to Plus rep, perhaps the people who have large amounts of positive rep, should refrain on giving the + Rep out for good posts and all and save it for the excellent posts, and leave the repping of good posts and ideas out to others with a lower standing.

I dissagree. I cant see the problem with people building rep quickly if they are posting good information, especially if the more learned members agree it is good information.

Go on river (and all the other heavy-hitters of +rep), give the full amount... you know you want to.

We do!!!! And, as you know I'm all for free (and abundant) love so I give out a lot of rep - but I rarely (total about 6 times) give -ve rep. I try to use kind words before I rep-slap and if they don't work then I'll go the jugular.

i dont see a need for this at all....

if the person has more than 30 rep, what does it matter. its really irrelevant in the scheme of things. there is no prizes for having massive rep, just that people will rely on your posts for valid and relevant information. everyone's rep is going to get HUGE eventually...doesnt matter how fast it gets there.

its only users with less than 10rep that other users will be warey of.

personally i think the rep system would be better off displaying the ratio of reputation per post. this way we can see the quality of the users post rather than just 700rep for a possible 20,000 posts. this would have to only apply to tech section though.

or an even better ratio would include rep, post count and time as a forum user.

that said, if the user has less than 30, then it would be worth holding off until they are deemed a worthy contributer. (instead of letting them reach 30 in one hit)

maybe your just scared that the person you are repping will be gettin X amount closer to your rep?

    my thoughts anyway

Actually I don't see rep as just a way to get an avatar and sell stuff...

If I ask a question and get two answers who am I more likely to listen to the person with 700+ rep or the person with much lower rep? Obviously the communtiy thinks that the previous knows their shit so I would be more inclined to listen to them...

However saying that most of the people with 700+ rep already know that their post is useless with out backing it up with some sort of explanation.

and thats where the system fails..... so what if it was oldcorollas and also his twin brother were posting.... with the same IQ and had just joined the forums (with little rep). oldcorollas twin brother wouldnt have been on the forums long enough to accumulate the same amount of rep as OC himself.

also there are people out there that post on rare occasions but have the trade/professional qualifications to answer your question. i would rather take advice from the person with most knowledge and experience in that area. obviously though, rep doesnt reflect this. but if this trade qualified person got repped everytime he posted then a ratio of rep per post would display this

Yes but if a person with only 10rep posted up good info with evidence to back it up people are not going to discount it only because they dont have 700rep.

If its good info it is unlikely the very super mega reputable people are going to argue with it.

rep is there to let people know you disapproved of their post. Shouldn't matter if you take 1 point or 100 points.

The lame thing is, if someone with the power to only take small amounts of rep disapproves of something one of the "heavy-hitters" says/does/posts, then they can cop retaliation -ve rep that ends up hurting them worse. I've found some (certainly not all) high rep members around toymods feel a bit holier-than-thou about their posts and any neg rep is quickly retaliated against.

This can cause people on the lower rungs to avoid giving negative rep cos they're too afraid they may lose "precious" rep points and thus, be seen as n00bs or poor contributors.

setting everyones rep capability to +1 or -1 rep would be the ideal.

I think River's idea for variable rep is the go for all, based on their rep giving authority.

I recieved some +rep for 1 or 2 post from a couple people who had big repping power and my rep jumped much more than I thought my contribution realy was worth.

A choice between big +rep(100%), small +rep(50%), small slap(50%), big slap(100%)sort of thing.

    regards
    Jon
