    can someone actually tell me what a nut splitter is and how it works?

    As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are

    There is a link to a pic in my first post, It has a loop that goes over nut and a chisel type point that is pushed into nut with a bolt.
    Place it over nut and tighten, will need a ratchet or air ratchet in where you are working.

    yeah was just having a look....might take a trip down the local supercheap tomorrow or the next day. my only problem would be getting a rachet or similar on the end.

    I know of two versions!
    1. my wifes knee.
    2. the other is a surround that goes around the nut with a pointed bolt you screw in to crack the sidewall of the nut.

    Can you get a set of vice grips on the end of the stud?

    If you can gold it with them, you might have a chance of getting the nut to move.
