Default 7MGTE "Turbo A" cam specs

Can anyone confirm the cam specifications for the turbo A 7MGTE?

I've been told that the cams were the same as the standard 7M, and that only the Group A cams offered higher lift and longer duration.

Wikipedia begs to differ. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Supra_Turbo-A , where it states 8.9mm lift and 272 duration but I'm still not reassured by this, as the info seems to come from a Turbo A owner's own site which is labelled with a "info may be wrong" disclaimer at the bottom of the engine specs page.

    Anyone know for sure?

Nah, seen those. I know that group A cams are more aggressive than stock (I used to have a pair) but the turbo A supra didnt come with those AFAIK. I was under the impression that the turbo A's power gains were attributed to MAP instaed of AFM and a highflowed CT26 running higher boost as well as different ECU

The reason I ask is a guy is selling a pair of Turbo A cams quoting 8.9mm lift and 272 duration. If thats true then theyre interesting to me. Most info on the web seems to originate from the same source as above though....

ive never seen them, but im VERY wary of the Turbo-A having such massive changes as a camshaft like you suggest. the other changes on the turbo-A were very subtle. and a number like "272" sounds very american 'stage 2 camshaft' ish for my liking. toyota have never made a camshaft with such a 'common' duration.

the group A camshafts on the otherhand, well theres 2 difrerent varieties, the 'softer' of the two is this one:

    10.88mm lift, 256 deg intake @ 50thou, 243 deg exhaust @ 50thou

the other profile elludes me right now, but runs around something ridiculous lift wise... cant remember the numbers

    272 and 264, 10.5mm lift.

they were the ones I had (and should have kept)

The guy with the cams is in Sydney, guess it cant hurt to grab a set of verniers and go have a look anyhow...

see, the numbers 272 and 264 are like neon lights screaming aftermarket "stage 2" and "stage 1" resepctively... whereas all the toyota profiles ive ever seen, whether measured at the base or at 50, have kooky odd numbers like 257, 243, 236 etc etc

Well, admittedly I didnt try and measure the duration, but they had filthy big TRD stamps in them... Perhaps they were the first variant you listed (I bought them from a yank )

Next question is is if the Turbo A cams are actually 8.9mm lift doesn't that blow rumours out of the water of the max lift to run before using the echo buckets being 8mm as the guys on supramania claim or would of toyota modded the turbo A head to take the cams.

I did tell you that Rona, up to 10mm before needing shim under although over 9 may need other head clearance work...

    9.5mm is recommended by JUN

other factors come into play including duration and acceleration profile of the cam lobe, as well as the dia of the bucket, and the thickness of shims youre using, but 8mm!!?? lol, idiot yanks...

issues you need to calculate for:

    spring coil bind
spring retainer vs stem seal bind
cam lobes vs bucket bore clearance
valve vs valve (if it fuckes up) clearance
valve vs piston cleranace - both in normal operation, and during fuckup
