have u tried cleaning the injectors?

may be that they are a lil clogged up with gunk?

EDIT: just read above post - if that has quietened it down maybe take them out and get them ultrasonically cleaned and flow tested

Well that's what I'll be doing once the engine is getting rebuilt.

That STP fuel injector cleaner also has an octane booster in it. AFAIK most injector cleaners have only enough octane booster in them to offset the dillution effect of adding the cleaner to the fuel... maybe the STP stuff packs more punch because its more expensive?

well I don't know if it was that expensive, but I got it for $11 for the bottle in a servo. the generic Caltex stuff was about a dollar cheaper, so yeh.

i wouldnt bet on the response not being up to scratch if its out mate, piggys cams were both 180 degrees out and it was more responsive and packed more of a punch than it does with the cams in the right place lol....as for the ping mate i wouldnt go rebuilding an engine because of a small ping...it sounds like hunting a fly with a bazooka to me...just take the injectors out..get em cleaned and flow tested...check ur fuel system for blockages...u mentioned it looks like its been running a little lean?...that sounds like ur problem right there...we all know how pig rich 162's run stock for stock...if it is running lean id look at why..fuel pump, blocked lines...gummed up or tired injectors..maybe even ecu issues mate?...you could try borrowing an ecu off another 162 with no known problems and sticking it in there to see what happens..
best of luck tracking it down mate

i still reckon get the injectors cleaned properly, should only take u 15 mins at most to get them out, cost $120 or less to have them cleaned and flow tested, and maybe 20 mins to put them all back in...

DV I suggested doing the rebuild because it is indeed, in need of a rebuild. The EGR valve is "a bit rattly" when you give it some revs, but it's unlikely to be the source of the ping.

I'll get the injectors tested when I can, I'm a bit reluctant to do it because I've never taken them out before.

Be careful the plugs don't break on you when you're unplugging the injectors, they have a tendency to be very brittle on these cars

not wrong there dale. still chasing up replacements.

Sorry i didn't get back to you EGR valve andrew, apparently when they are stuck open and your pulling in exuast and reburning it all the time it can be a source of pinging. I have never had to take one off/test it, but i'll see if i can find a simple way to test it's working at least you can rule that out then.

if you arent confident you should be able to drive into a fuel injector specialist and have them remove, service and re-install them for u
