Default What tool do I use?

    Hi all..

This will be a quick and easy one for someone here...

I'm tryin to get to my spark plug valley to clean the oil out
The picture supplied is looking between my 7M cam covers.

I assume I have to undo the inverted hex type nut thingo's.. But with what??
(I think there is about 3 of them in the valley from memory)

its this a Toyota specific tool? or something I can go pick up from Super Cheap or hardware store?..

or am I going about it all wrong and I don't even need to undo this

+rep for those with the answers...

    cheers

hmm, do they make allen keys that big?

id assume you could get a bit to suit a 1/2" drive ratchet, i know you can get smaller ones. just measure the width and go shopping i guess.

    ok.. my bad..
I just checked the TSRM online and found that I'm on the right track.. and that I do actually need a special tool to undo these.. or a SST as the call it..

the question still remains - where do I get it from?

Try a tool shop to find an allen key that big.

Failing that, go to your local dealership and say can i please order this part number!

heres what i would do....1st find a common garden variety allen key that fits (looks like it could be 12mm across the flats) 2nd take out trusty angle grinder and chop about 40mm off the allen key...3rd insert piece into a matching size 1/2inch drive socket set...

    should work fine...cheers leso

I knew it wouldn't take long..
    problem solved

14mm allen key will do the job. I'll pick one up tomorrow..

for reference - there is an official tool to use

    http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Librar...tion=C&Page=16

the last one on that page..
but who wants to use the official tool when you can just bodge something up like leso does!

    cheers guys...

mods - shut down thread if you like...

Yes, If you are sure that it isn't a core plug, like those identical looking ones on the 4AG head!

A bolt with that size head & vise-grips, or 2 nuts jammed for using a wrench/socket.

Yeah nah you don't want to undo those doobies, as allencr said they're core plugs, they shouldn't be holding anything in (besides coolant ), that plate should be able to come out without removing them.

damn, i, was going to say get a bolt with the right sized head and weld a nut on the other end. Then you could use whatever on it.

Those things arn't on there very tight, You can get away with a very wide bladed flat headed screwdriver or custome tool (or put a nut in there and put a socket over the nut sticking out.

They do indeed hold the middle cam cover in, they look the same as the ones screwed into the head underneath (those are the ones you don't need to touch)
