(the holes on mine were backwards)(bolt and pin holes i mean)
Looking for a new toy. If you have something 18r powered let me know.

I can't believe this shit - So I thought I would share what happened. Some of you know already, but basically I went to the drags at Calder park on Friday and had a few runs, then on the last run I missed a gear between 3rd and 4th and the a bad noise followed after the over-rev. Upon inspection the following day I found one of the clutch pressure plate straps to be broken in the middle. The other 2 straps had kinked.

I have to go and talk with exedy tomorrow to see what they think - But, on the phone they were basically like " we need to talk about your driving style ".

The clutch in question is in their sportstuff range - It's been on the car less than 2000 kms.

The second hand clutch I put on, this weekend feels like it's slipping a little. I want to know if having the flywheel machined too far could influence the pressure put on the friction disc enough to slip. There is still a step up on the fly, but it is not very pronounced.

What a bugger to hear that, it looked in pretty good nick also!

Let's hope Exedy come to the party...

I really cant put words on how bad quality the exedy clutches are.

My camry, just a standard car, ate that clutch to pieces within 2 months, with normal sunday driving, it was a heavy duty clutch, but then i got new clutch from toyota and thats been going fine for a couple of years now, and its still not very worn.

i also had a exedy in my Ke 70 with a standard 3K 1300 engine, this ate the clutch up within a month, then i put in another exedy, and that just exploded after a few weeks. Pressure plates and flywheel was all in good shape, so that was not the issue. Exedy is cheap for a reason...or should i say many reasons? none of them seems to be good, althought i know people had exedy that did the job for some km's or years.

if u look at a toyota brand clutch, and a exedy one, u can easely see the toyota disc is solid as a rock compared to exedy one.

I real good clutch, for racing etc, is sachs, but i dont know if u have that in australia, cost a bit more, but is very well worth it in the long run.

Maybe you need to upgrade to a bigger flywheel and clutch setup. The t series clutches are quite pissweak.

ive never really had any grief with exedy clutches.. is this a one off case of have lots of people had problems ? the only issue ive had is wear but generally only in cases where the clutch was either in appropriate for the engine (too much power to standard clutches) or inappropriate for the conditions (ceramic and being slipped daily in and out of a crazy driveway)

I too have used Excedy clutches for the last few years and have had zero problems with them. Then again my rev limit is only 7000, so there's really no chance of that causing dramas.

Also I really doubt excess flywheel machining would cause clutch slipping for 2 reasons:
1 - The surface the pressure plate bolts to is machined as well as the surface the clutch plate sits on (at least on 4A flywheels anyway, doubt T would be any different). So the fly gets thinner, but the spacing between pressure plate and clutch plate shouldn't change.

2 - I was told by a clutch shop that I trust (BGT in Hawthorn) that the clamp pressure of a clutch is actually highest when the diaphragm springs are just starting to move. As they move in as you tighten up the pressure plate bolts the clamp pressure in fact drops slightly. So a smaller step should increase pressure up to the point that the diaphragm isn't actually moving.

    I doubt 2 is a major effect.

Also I suggest talking to BGT, they do plenty of custom stuff and may have some good advice. Plus I've found their customer service to be very impressive, even if a failure was arguably "operator error".
I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.

In any case I think an ignitino cut rev limiter would be a good investment.

I gotta say, I think my clutch plate is exedy too, and I haven't had it slip (god KNOWS I've given it a FLOGGING).

My 2c on this one is go and talk to the guy at Northern Brake and Clutch. I was directed there YONKS ago, and the guy really does know what he's doing.

I gave him the bits and he gave me something that continually breaks diffs, so it must be strong. Hehe....

He gets a lot of wankers in there, and still gives them the time of day, so he's alright (when I was in there, some young bloke of a certain denomination[I'll leave you to guess] came in and wanted a 'sports crutch' for his stock suzuki ignus. The guy still spoke to him)

Having driven with Ed occasionally and having a very similar car AND having done the exact same thing on a few occasions, without clutch failure, I can say its not driving style related.

IMO their clutches should not be labled 'sports' clutches if they can't stand some thrashing.

since this happened twice under exactly the same circumstances, trying working out why u seem to miss gears from 3rd to fourth. I would at least listen to what exedy have to say in regards to their clutches aswell as what they have to say about your driving style. I wouldn't take that comment as an attack on your technique, they most likely want to talk to about your style and technique and suggest a different clutch for your individual needs. I dont believe that they are a "cheap" clutch company. Theyhave been in the game for many years. They used to be called "Daikin". They supply clutches to the JGTC touring cars. They are also Japanese. Not chinese or Korean etc. So IMO i would rule out the quality of their product being the problem. I have an exedy clutch in mine, granted its a nissan box but its one very nice clutch. Cost me 1K but its whorth every dollar.

And dont forget, "sports" clutches are exactly that....sports. Not racing. dont get them confused.

i was under the impression exedy clutches sold in australia were made here.

ive got an exedy 5 puck in mine, and ive felt a big difference in the pedal since running it in, the friction point keeps moving up, its clamped with a TRD pressure plate.

i wont use exedy again, ill get something custom built, its worth the extra money seven times over.

also, i fail to see how a clutch can break while the gearbox is in neutral? someone care to explain to me?
