I'm glad you have found the problem, and that it's not engine related. It's the first time I've seen that happen though.
I'm sure its a great relief that you at least know what it was.
I look forward to seeing it back on the road.
I took a chance(It was pre-loved). But looked to be in excellent nick. Ah well.

I'm glad to see it was something so simple and easy to fix. Hopefully it'll be back up and running in no time.
For clutch advice and bits, especially custom stuff, I'd recommend calling or visiting BGT in Hawthorn/Glenferrie. Though they do distribute Excedy which may not sit too well with you right at the moment.
Hen
try also meridian in moorabbin. thats where i get my clutches problem. no problems at all thus far.
told ya ed!!!! awsome news!
The package is only going to be as good as the build job. There's probably heaps of them being built by young guys with little experience in backyards and sheds etc., it's not a big-budget project motor really.Originally Posted by sleepin22
There was nothing wrong with the build. It was a clutch failure issue.Originally Posted by SeptemberSquall

just read through the whole thread
great news it wasnt something difficult to replace. I bet your feeling great right now
Daniel.
Just thought I would let you guys know that I contacted exedy and they had one of their engineers have a look at the broken article. Basically the clutch cover was old, had experienced a few low gears at high rpm and weakened the straps. My item was second hand, apparently pretty abused, a pretty old model - so there was no way they were going to give me a FREE top of the line clutch. They did however organise a very cheap one, which looks the goods. I've been told that I won't have any problems with it.![]()

Hi, good to see it was nothing major, although pity about pulling the engine apart to find the problem
I was going to say, if it makes you feel better i drove my car for the first time after i took it the track a week ago and now it misses and is down on power. I'm hoping its just a fouled plug from bad tuning on the twin solex's. Checked the lead and that seems to be fine, not much of a difference when the remove the 3rd cylinder lead.
It better be the plugs, although i only replaced them a couple of hundred k's ago...
Good news about the cheap clutch. A few years ago i noticed my car way swaying. I looked at the K-mac swaybar and it was snapped in two. I had a quick look and my sister "metallurgical' engineer” deemed it a material fault. It was a weird break.
I contacted K-mac and as the bar was quite old they could not replace it for free, but offered me a good price which was nice. Pity it took a little while to reply to my email… I had already bought a whiteline unit. Thought it was weird for a swaybar to snap, as I’ve not heard of it even on abused factory ones. Must have been some bad ass luck as I’ve not had any troubles with other k-mac parts.
I'm surprised there aren't a lot more pressure plate failures like this with this type design, though it is almost the only design used..
Did it get a lot of down shifting & engine braking????
Those 'straps' between the cover and friction plate are great in tension when putting power to the wheels, but when they're in compression & trying to put power from the wheels into the engine, they are going to buckle & flex.
Do the Honda engines that rotate opposite, use a PP with opposite direction straps??
