No valve sealing issues there, compression would have been lower and oil would not have brought it up much at all.

first guess would be a bent valve. Could be cam timing jumped a tooth. There is only a slight differnce there so probably not to worry about.

Well, head is off. The valves look fine. The clylinders also look fine. no chunks floating around in the sump either...
Assumption is the mother of all f**kups...
Nothing obvious yet. Valve clearances as follows...
Valves appear in good condition..
Cylinders appear in good condition..Hone crosshatch pattern still present..

There were some very small metal shavings in the sump. Nothing like chuncks of teeth though....

awesome post by sleepin22, agree totally.
well ed you know what happened to my 2t/3t, the best way to forget about your own problems is to listen to someone elses:
after around 2+ grand of machining, reconditioning and new parts, i drove my motor for two blocks before i heard it munch itself. mine did not get revved above 3, and happened at around 2000 rev's. it was supposedly done professionally, but no-one took responsibility.
so i was left with a stuffed head, bent conrod and a blown up piston.
shocking news brother, keep on swinging.
remember what ali said: "only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down into the bottom of his soul and come up with an extra ounce of power when it is needed." or something like that
there's my wank wank post

as for the motor.. if you rotate it now, with head off, are the pistons still in sync?
is it possible something came of the motor externally? like a fan blade (had this happen), part of the clutch... something like that? do the water pump and alternator still turn smoothly?
for the valves, it might be worth popping the springs off, colouring the seat and valve sealing face with permanent marker or engineers blue, and using a bit of ine lapping paste, rotate them to se where they seal... that should hopefully turn up a poor sealing surface (but not your vibration problem), then roll the valve stem on a piece of glass/mirror, and see if the stems are still true...
i guess next is bearings, ringlands and rods![]()
have fun, and think of it as a failure investigation.. rather than an expensive pile of parts![]()

Yeah, I though so too. I think the oil I shot down there for the comp test may have been a part of this too though. I started the motor up again after this pulling each lead individually to try and determine which made the least difference. I couldn't work it out.Originally Posted by oldcorollas
Mmmm...I suppose next weekend I'll pull the motor and have a closer inspection....Might call on some of you chaps to give me a hand....Someone suggested today that I could have streched a rod!? surely there would be more eveidence to suggest this...Will have to have a better look tomorrow...Originally Posted by oldcorollas

could this be an issue with the 2/3T hybrids? I know alot of people have had success but also alot have had some major dramas. Just a thought....

If you can turn the motor over then just check all the pistons sit at the same height at TDC.
If that is the case then it should be easy enough to spot.
Good luck with it all.
My sig has been pruned as it was over 5 lines long.

Solved!!!!! Well, eager to find out what was going on marcus and I pulled the gearbox off and to my delight found a few nicely sized scraps of metal. The starter motor was the first indication of the fault, then the scraps, then the series of scratches on the bell. The clutch itself revealed the final source of fault. Here's the pics....
Now...Just gotta put the thing back together again. (I'm taking this opportunity to buy a new clutch and get some porting of the head done) Any clutch recomendations? Exedy have failed me - lol

the centerforce clutches have a good reputation, also i have head of gettting the fly wheel studded to run a holden red pressure plate and crown friction plate
Great news that it was not an engine failure.
Bit dissapointing from a brand name clutch though, new or pre-loved?
