CAS "star" trigger disc probs (2JZ)

Well supposedly this thing is meant to be connected solidly to the crank pulley for the timing belt. I think mine is not solidly connected and is just being held in place by the key way. (I am hoping this will solve my intermittent error code 12)

I have heard this is a semi common prob for 2JZ's, does anyone know more about this, and how to fix it? Just tack weld it back on?

Do I need any special tools to get the toothed timing gear off?

erm... it shouldn't be connected solidly, or you'll be REALLY pissed off if you ever need to change it.
It should be a painfully snug fit though, with no free play and requiring a lot of swearing and special tools to remove/replace. (I know, I replaced mine not 2 months ago)

What did you replace? The star? Why did it need to be replaced? What tools do you need? I have removed the harmonic ballancer before, it was no big deal.

I am changing the crank seal so it has to come off anyway. Someone said they can come loose. I remember mine was a bit loose I could move it around easy. But I didn't know what it was supposed to be like so I just left it. There was a lot of side to side movement.

oh hang on.. do you mean the star disc was not attached to the pulley gear?
if that's the case, that is a bad thing

it's a single item that is replaced as a whole. Mine had to be replaced because somehow a rock/screw/misc. hard object got in there, ripped a few teeth of the pulley then promptly are my timing belt.
Tools .. I used a universal crank pulley puller, to pull both the harmonic balancer and the trigger disc/timing pulley assembly. (I just took my replacement timing pulley to a bolt shop and asked for 2 long bolts that would fit)
to get it back on... a metal tube that fits nicely on the face of the pulley, and a baby sledge

Cool. So the gear comes off in the same way as the balancer? Ie just pull off the balancer then pull of the gear after the same way?

Yep, it wasn't connected. You know I though it was a bit dodgy but thought maybe the keyway should be enough. So do you reckon I have figured out my intermittent error code 12???!!!11111 I'm doing the crank seal at the same time. I should have fucking asked about that disc being loose and fitted a new seal when I done the belt. Now I have to take the radiator out bla bla bla.

yep, gear comes off same way but uses different bolts. highly recommend some inox/wd40 to get that sucker off.
part was.... $120 from toyota from memory? or maybe $200, my memory is not so great

Thanks guys. I am going to inspect the condition and if its OK (it looked ok when I done the belt) I will do what the yanks are doing and weld the prick back on.

personally, I'd say "and because the yanks do it, I'll make sure not to"

should be fine, as long as it all lines up.

hehe. I will check it out. I dont think it would be too hard to line it up. If it looks like it will be dodgy for some reason I will get a new one.

The chopper part of the pulley is held on by some crimps that could well have let go. A couple of blasts with the TIG and it won't be going anywhere. You will have to pay attention to getting it back in it's original spot though. You might have to compare it to the one that should be connected to my 2/1 JZ.
