    Default W55 into MarkII rx12?

    Hi

Does anyone happen to know how it is to install a w55 trans into a markII rx12? im worried about the shifter hole and the trans travers, this gearbox seems to be very big compeared to my old box.

Is the G55 and W55 the same trans with diffrent bellhousing?

    Thanks for ur answers

You will have to locate the gearbox crossmember a few centimeters further backwards. It is easily done with some angle bolted up to the original mounting holes. You will need an R series bellhousing, here they can be found on rt142 coronas and ra6x celicas. Not sure what will be available in Norway.

As for the shifter, there are 4 different positions available, they are all interchangeable (see FAQ's) You would have to place your old w40 along side the new box and work out which shifter position will suit.

I'm not 100% sure on the G55, I was under the impression that the shift mechanism's are different, maybe cable / lever operated rather than a shifter straight on top? Bellhousings are interchangeable between G55 & W55.

    Cheers

As said, have a look for the Picture of W5X (alloy) shifter positions, there are 4, one of which will suit you. The W5X position are interchangeable.

I was under the impression that the G55 was out of hilux's etc and hence contained very different ratios (truck like ), as well as a different shifter position.

the W55 should be the same length as the W50 so the tailshaft will be the right length, and the splines are also the same on each gearbox.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the answer

Will the trans axle still fit? both with the splines and the lenght?

So there should be no problem mounting a w55 trans into a markII even tho the box seems huge compared to the old w40/50?

I been told that the markII and the cressidas is buildt in the same frame/chassis, does that mean most of the parts like transmission travers, engine mounts, shifthole etc is on the same?

    Thanks again

Thanks Wilbo, that pretty much summoned up what i was wondering about.

the box i have now (w55) has the shifter located very far back, but where can i find another? any tips on where i can buy one that suits me? or do i just have to go junkyard hunting?

I think the W40/W50 came with the most front and second most rear as the possible position...?

This is my understanding of what came with what with alloy W5X's (there are some missing of course, such as Carina)

    Most forward (W5X) = RA60, RA65, MA61, RT142, GZ10, GX61
    Second most forward (W5X) = ?
    Second most rear (W5X) = MA70, GA70
    Most rear (W5X) = SA63

I think that you will be after a RA60, RA65, MA61 etc type, but best to check that! Find the picture and get a tape and measure your old one...

The car came with a W50 so fitting the W55 should not be a drama as far as I am aware.

    Cheers

    Thanks again for your answer

will the shifter thingy also fit from w40/50's too?

i guess i will find out best when i put the trans side by side, so i guess i will start doing that one day soon.

nope - the w40/50 shifter wont fit the W55.

if you are after the most foward position shifter type W55 then hunt down a box from a RA60/RA65 or RT142.

one problem you will encounter with fitting a W55 is that the rubber mounts sit more rearward than the W50.

there are 2 ways you can minimise this misallignment.
    1. turn around the gearbox rubber isolater
    2. turn the crossmember around

you could even be lucky and find that the floorpan has 'extra' holes to fit this gearbox......RA40's do

I used the forward most position on my gearbox, however i had to trim the front of the tunnel slightly. Either of the middle two positions will be best providing the R series engines sit in the same spot as the M series.

Tailshaft will go straight in without modification & Theres plenty of room to fit the box in the tunnel.

The floorpan does have extra holes but they were still too far forward. Turning the mount around didn't correct it enough & the crossmember is symetrical.

Try using the RA40 member as it is "bent" and when you reverse it, it makes the rearward possition. This is what Brett has done and says above.

Sounds like a good idea. Can anyone measure the length of the celica crossmember from the mounting holes at each end? I have measured a mk2 one, it is 655mm

    RA40 = 335mm apart (left to right)

and 35mm spacing (front to rear)

mark II corona must be TA22 spec (uber wide)

you should be able to use your gear box xmember also look for a ra60 gear box the stick is in the same posi as the w40 /50 is all you need to do is turn the gear box mount around and it will bolt up also try to find a 21r bellhousing as well so it will bolt up to your motor
