    Default 3SGE Cam upgrades

After going for another rid in a mates cammed up escort, I got another hankering to get some big cams for my 3sge. From what I sorta-think I read/heard I need to upgrade the shims? Anyway, where/who in Australia sells cams for the 3sge, wouldent mind some good, well developed ones, and to have them installed.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers dudes

a lot of places sell cams for the 3sge. look for something around the 270-290 intake and 10-11 exhaust. any more and they'll be a need for mods to the head. this being said, you'll need an aftermarket computer to run it. i presume you have this already?
there is no great need for cams, because you end up loosing a lot of bottom end power for top end performance, which is good for track, but gives you the shitters on the road. may i suggest you leave this to the last option!
a good 3sge will out-run an escort without hassle even without cams. this being said, it will be the biggest improvement in power you could make!

You can ring Clive Cams in Melb. or Wades Cams also in Melb. Or Tighe cams in Qld - They did my cams and posted them to Melb. I have a spare set of gen 3 aftermaket billet cams if you want

You can buy new billet cams from Wade for ~$450 delivered. I see no value in getting reground cams when new is so cheap.

In the 3SGTE the Gen3 had the biggest cams by 4 degrees and 0.5mm lift on the intake cam only. In the 3SGE I assume the Beams has the biggest cams but of the basic 3S's the Gen3 has the biggest cams as far as I know. The Gen1 can't use cams made for gen 2 or 3.

I have a wolf 3d ver 4 running the thing, its in a ta23 which isnt my daily driver so low down torque isnt the biggest problem(I am not sitting in traffic in my baby). Yeah I already out run him, but was thinking about upping it a bit and for 450 bucks for a new set it seems like the next best thing apart from adding a supercharger to it.

gemtoy - what are the specs? Are they mild enough to run in my stock gen2 head?

I have a set of standard gen3 3sgte cams if you are interested in a mild upgrade.

just a word of warning ,seems every 1 wonts to sell you cams that good for you ,but if you increase your lift you will have to go shim under bucket and also change valve springs and retainers and also buy new shims

WindeX - THe cams would require shim under bucket conversion. Also I agree with "Celica RA45" get some specs on the cams first to make sure they will fit OK.
My I was told the billet cams cost about $1200 for both so I think you best bet is to ring around. You should to to Clive from Clive cams look him up in the yellow pages. He was the main man at Wades cams for a long time and then started up his own company. I would listen to him and not just go by what other on this site think.

Wades quoted me 560 for a pair of billets in whatever grind i want. Im in the same baot as you windex. Im looking at something that wont be too much of a hassle to drive on the road though but will give a bit more mid-range and top end. I'm having the head ported, evrything port matched, valve seats reground...etc etc and doing an underbucket conversion. Will let you know what i come up with once i talk some more with the workshop. Im using motor improvements in St Kilda for the headwork

Ahhh good to hear from someone who has done/doing it also. Let me know how it turns out, I am half a mind to do it, but I wouldent mind some quad throttles too, I reckon I could see some very nice figures with headwork + cams + quads.

I got some nice seat of your pants improvements when I did cams, headwork and bigger throttle body in my ST162. I had a spare motor so I got the cams reground by Tighe (cant remember the specs werent too lumpy though), had the head flowed and shaved, had the throttle body ground out and put 7M butterfly in. Never put it on the dino though but it ran fine on the stock computer.

I wanted to stick some quads on but pay iosnt that great for a 2nd year apprentice so thats not gonna be happening and i dont think i'll do it further down the track either. I can PM you some details of some quads in melbourne for sale that suit gen2 perfectly if you want.

I can't recall at this point what the donor motor is, but you can use shimless buckets in the 3SGE and not worry about little metal discs flying around in your head ever again.
