Post TA22 Diff Removal and AE86 LSD install

    Hi guys,

I just bought a TRD 2-way LSD (part number 41301-TA005) for an early Corolla GT-S (AE86 Sprinter/Trueno/Levin). This is the one with the smaller Zenki axles, NOT the post 85 T-series version with larger axles (Kouki).

Now, according to my research this LSD will fit into a T-series diff on a TA22 Celica like mine. So, following the instructions on another thread:

    http://toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?t=986

I used a "donor" TA22 T-seried diff to extract the differential carrier with the current "open" diff. The photos below show my progress:

    http://redhat.gene.id.au:9999/copper....php?album=131

I'm going to add some comments on the pics and steps a bit later today, but thought you might like a look.

The next step is to take the removed carrier and new LSD to a diff place to have transferred over. I'm not confident enough to do this and get things like Backlash, etc. set properly. But here are the before shots, and I'll post more up as I progress further so that those interested can see how this conversion turns out.

    Cool. Looks good.

If you need some help/advice in fitting the LSD centre, I can recommend someone who has had a heap of experience building Sprinters.

Do you happen to have the torque settings for the crown wheel bolts? And Carrier studs?

If so i would be greatly indebted

I think the torque settings for the carrier studs are:

    6.7in and LSD: 800 kg-cm (58 ft-lb)
    6.38in: 600 kg-cm (43 ft-lb).

Don't know for the crown wheel bolts.

Glytch - I'm looking for some advice on LSD centres (funny that!) :-) Could you please pass on that contact to me?
    Thanks,

Thumbs up Re: TA22 Diff Removal and AE86 LSD install

I dropped the TA-22 T-series carrier with open diff and the LSD "chunk" off at Schultz Auto Electrics this morning. Don't worry, they do mechanical work too, and have done a great job setting my turbo, etc. up as they rally Toyotas.

So, I should get it back in the next week or so to be "slipped" into the T-series on my car.

OK, the LSD centre has been put into the TA22 T-series carrier, so I'll go pick it up on Monday.

Apparently took 2-3 hours, including cleaning and refacing the back of the crown gear. No problems fitting and setting the backlash (provided instructions from an AE86 LSD manual), although he had to make-up a "tool" as he didn't have the Toyota-specific tool for adjustment.

I'll post some pics when I pick it up, and then onto fitting it into the car itself.

Talking Re: TA22 Diff Removal and AE86 LSD install

I got my donor T-series centre back today with the TRD LSD installed, with backlash and pre-load set according to the AE86 notes. A couple of pictures are now in my album and here's one for quick look

    GeneSPIDA,

If you run an LSD in a standard TA22 diff housing and with standard TA22 axel shafts you may need to shorten your axel shafts.

The axel shafts on my TA22 which came with LSD from the factory are roughly 5mm shorter than standard TA22 axel shafts. I was told this is because the side clutch effort by the LST will push on the end of a standard axel shaft and the result will ultimately be broken wheel bearings or worse LSD side clutch pack.

    Something to think about.

    Thanks,

If you're 100% sure that the length should be about 5mm shorter, I may need to look into getting the "spare" axles cut down. Don't want to do that though if it's not necessary.

Did you compare yours with a standard axle?

    GeneSPIDA,

I have compared LSD and standard TA22 axel shafts side by side.

LSD shafts definitely approx 5mm shorter.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, looks like I'll be putting-off putting it in the car then until the axles are shortened.

Noticed you must have edited your message too as the email said 50mm, but your reply now correctly says 5mm
