Thumbs up Re: TA22 Diff Removal and AE86 LSD install

OK, since I already had one of the shorter LSD axles, I had the other machined down to match it's length.

It was a little fiddly getting the axles all the way in past the brake springs, etc. and on the retaining bolts, but it eventually got there.

One thing I noticed straight away that was different to the open diff, was that when I rotated the axle, the driveshaft would rotate. With the open diff, this didn't happen, but if you rotated the driveshaft the wheel would rotate (can't remember if both wheels did or just one and whether in the same or reverse direction?). Anyway, with the LSD, rotating either axle will turn the other wheel in the same direction and rotate the driveshaft. Just something I noticed.

The above also makes rotating a wheel "interesting" if the other side is on the ground, as it doesn't want to turn. Guess that's a consequence of LSD too.

I had a stupid moment when I was trying to figure-out how the LSD oil bottle filler neck worked, resulting in me stuffing it up so it wouldn't work. Anyway, I went and bought myself a pump to do it with instead. I recommend this as it seemed to take a bit of time otherwise.

Just took the car for a drive. There's no strange noises taking off or while driving, and the car turns fine. It did seem to be a little heavier to steer around the corners, but not much. And that could just be that I'm not used to it after not driving it for a week or so. But again, I'm guessing that's just the LSD attempting to resist the turn before the pressure on the clutch/springs is overcome.

Haven't tried to spin the wheels yet, but I did notice a slight "chirp" on one side in some sand on a corner.

Added a few more pictures to my album:

I bought the LSD from Japan for $A606 including freight, and then $190 to setup the LSD in the TA22 carrier (setting backlash and preload), so that's about $796 total.

Then it cost me $25 to have one axle shortened in a lathe by about 5mm. I took it to the same place that setup the centre in the carrier for me, and they used their lathe. Took him about half an hour.

Someone else suggested that you could cut it yourself. Not sure how easy that would be with a hacksaw though.

    Hope that's what you wanted?

I think they are reasonably hard to come by, especially TRD ones. Although, I see they have a list price some where around US$1000? But I haven't seen too many for sale. In fact, I'd seen one on EBay the week before for similar money, but by the time I'd done some research (1 day), it had been bought. So, I thought I'd missed-out. By the seller had another one coming up, and that's the one I bought. It was second-hand though, apparently tested and OK (I took a risk there) - said used for 11,000kms.

There are Cusco and Kuzz ones more readily available, although I think they were in the ball-park of US$800+. Can get those new, and apparently some of them won't require you to shorten the axles as they are made to be fitted to non-LSD cars as well - apparently.

I've been looking for one on and off for a while, and thought I'd better grab it while I could.

    Hi all,

    GeneSPIDA
    Very good post, interesting....

I am also interested in installing the differential LSD in my CELICA TA23.
Do you believe that I would have problems to install a LSD in my TA23??
The differentials TA22 and TA23 are different?

Please do you or someone can identify the LSD pics and say to me if this model LSD is equal to yours? a friend sells it to me but I am not sure 100% if it will fit in my celica TA23.

    Thanks in avanced,
    Gerardo

The TA22 and TA23 should be the same as the axle splines didn't change until '85 AE86's.

Thread from the dead sorry, but curious if anyone knows what torque these LSD's are capable of putting up with?

    Cheers
