Default spacing actuator = more boost

    Hey all,

Just purchased myself a very nice, tidy MZ20. Car is great, very happy with the purchase, but the factory 6ish pound doesn't exactly do wonders. Has anyone here had any experience 'spacing' the actuator to leave the wastegate shut longer for a few extra pound? ie, placing a few washers between the actuator and it's mounts to effictively move it forward slightly. For the expense of a couple of washers, it's quite a cheap power up.

I just wanted to know if anyone here has used this method particularly on a 7M and how far they spaced it. I'm not expecting massive increases or anything and i don't need any 'get a boost controller' comments, I would just like to know if anyone has used this method and what a safe level would be with this motor.

    cheers, -jimmy

It'll do what you are planning but often on some cars it can be a damn fine line between increasing the boost a little and a little increase in boost response and starting to introduce boost creep.

Just do it in small steps and see how you go, test for boost creep too each step as it can be subtle and nothing to worry about or it can be bad and creep up several psi over the rpm range. You are effectively decreasing the working range of the actuator the further you space it (thus decreasing the amount the wategate flap can open in the turbo).

Buy the turbotech boost tee I think it is.
Find it on Ebay for around $30.

This is what I was going to say. From wht way I can tell, you won't gain any real change in boost output because the wastegate will still open at the same pressure, it may just be that it has to move further before the flap opens.

I would think that if you are fiddling around in that area anyway, it maky be better to come up with some mechanism for adding preload onto the wastegate actuator. This is what I did with mine and got the stock 4psi actuator to open at 8psi, a simple boost controller does the rest. Seems to work fine as high as 12 psi with a tiny spike, 10psi is steady though.

I cut the actuator arm (as it needed to be shifted anyway) and fitted a chrome-moly tube over it that is nice and tight. Flatten the end of the tube, slide it over the wastegate flap and you're done, adjustable actuator arm

i wacked one of them gfb bleed valves on mine ,a piece of piss to fit up and it worked fine on the twins at 12lbs but when i fitted the single it must gain boost quicker because sometimes it will bounce to 16lbs and hit what i expect is the boost cut and buck berore it settles on 12lbs. there is a lot of power to be found by just increasing boost. cheers bigwad
