vvti is on the intake side only on vvti 1jz so surely exhaust side would still be non interference ? and not have bent valves?

OMFG ... you guys are NOT gonna believe it...

Carbon build up in the chamber which lead to the exhaust valve not sealing 100% ... that was causing the leak ...

The mechanic looked at all the markings again - couldn't find anything odd... but THEN.....

Combustion chambers had a bit of carbon build up.. which lead to the exhaust valves not sealing 100% ... hence the low readings...

Ran a bit of cleaner through it.. hey it starts up!!! but a little rough... and compression readings were back up to 150!! ... ok , run some more cleaner.. ALRIGHT now we're talking !!

While it's there, getting him to change over oil/filter and spark plugs.. I don't run any fancy oil.. 10w 40 plenty..

    Thanks to everyone who responded!

    VERY interesting!
Could you give a bit more details? Do you have any idea how carbon could build up while the engine was just off road? And it's usually intake valves that suffer most from carbon (though piston rings do as well).

p/s toyota recommends 5w30-10w30 for vvti engines

Sounds a bit convenient, never heard of low compression on all 6 due to some carbon that quickly went away with a bottle of cleaner.
    But, could be wrong
