There seems to be 50/50 people online saying yes/no

Anyone got a long motor they want to turn over by hand with the belt off?

now that it has been mentioned, i did sound as if the engine was turning/cranking without any resistance of a compression stroke... ??

well apparently, I have bent exhaust valves..

I'll get some more details soon - but the car is going back to the place that did the 100k service.

    from the tuners:

All cylinders between 40 and 60 PSI. Leak down shows 55% on Cylinder 1 and 45% on Cylinder 3. Leaking out of exh valves. Head to be removed for further evaluation.

Damn, answers one question, vvti is definatly an interfearance design.
Assuming the shop is decent, they will fix their fuckup although I'm amazed they got it wrong to begin with.

Exhaust valves are $18 a pop from amayama. $200 there
Seats will need to be re-cut, valve clearances re-set, head skimmed. Probably $300-400 there at a rough guess
    VRS kit - $150-200

Both are possible, re-set the belt and the mechanic will know straight away though.
But as everything is between 40-60psi...... your more than a tooth out I think.

Doesn't 400 sound more like used head in mint condition?

I was thinking that but I'm not sure how easily a vvti head is to buy?

Eh, buy a long motor and use the head off it. Keep the rest for another day.
Skim and a VRS kit wont set you back much, cheaper than changing the whole fucking motor lol

Did ya take the cam covers off and make sure that when both inlets and outlets were supposed be closed (cams clear of caps/shims).... they actually were both closed ?? If the exhaust cam was miss-timed, the valves could be just off the seats.
Long shot, but better than fixing bent valves !!

    Cheers... jondee86

EDIT: Bah... didn't notice there were two pages to this thread :-\

    Thanks for the responses.

Jondee86 - that's what they are doing this time round. Wishful thinking but I do hope it's something along the lines that you mentioned. There wasn't excessive shim clearance found either and it was all consistent.

So fingers crossed on Monday will know what the deal is.

In the meantime though, what is the stigma attached to reconditioning a head? surely it's just a simple process that's done regularly??
