    Hey guys.

Finally got the AC hooked up in decade (after I dicked about making lines, getting the electrical side sorted, getting Pirtek to remake the lines that weren't right the first time...)

Held stable vac for 72 hours (3rd time lucky!)

Went to gas it, all works, electrical side works...and the compressor is fisted. Much sadness. Does anyone know which generic compressor can be used to replace the 1UZ crown compressor? It *looks* pretty standard...just thought someone might have come across it in the past...

    Thanks!

does the existing compressor have any part # stickers on it? From my limited research, toyota tends (or tended) to use a limited range of compressors (e.g. just about all the FWD Celica and Camry compressors are common, similar applies to groups of RWD models).

Crown compressor is a no go, fouls the engine mount.

whats on there now? Has something been adapted if the crown doesn't fit?

Edit, the soarer comp uses a part number 147200-533x, the are many body's with the 147200 part number but obviously are mounted for other applications and have different clutch assay. Something with the right part number may be, and use the word loosely, made to fit. Otherwise pop down to auto cool in east Perth and speak to mike, he has heaps of different comp on the shelf and he. May know something that could work.

First off how do you know the compressor fisted?

Noisey? Not pumping when gauges are hooked up?

Part number is really the only sure fire way to order one, other than going to an auto AC shop

That a delta T of 20 degrees below ambient, thats pretty damn good!

One thing I would reccomend and will make your system a bit more efficent, is to wrap the metal joints of your cold line (Suction) with some insulating tape like this http://globosupply.com/index.php?mai...products_id=61.

Its not needed, but for the cost of $20 or so and the difference it makes on those mega hot days is worth every cent imho.
haha true that, works a treat now.

Ill definitely look into the insulating tape, dad may even have some in the shed. ha.

Both of the above! Made a bloody horrible rattly noise, and also didn't seem to generate pressure correctly with gauges connected. Does anyone know a rough cost to recon one?

a recon normally requires a exchange unit, yours would probably be super fucked and not rebuildable. Either buy a recon outright ( allthough they may not want to loose a stock item) or new from memory was about $900/$1000.

All good, I've found a good condition soarer one which should swap over.

Next question: How much oil should I use in the system? It's essentially identical to the MA61 system, with a 1UZ compressor stuck in the mix.

    Hi all,
    relatively new backyarder here..
    Great thread.
I've got a stuffed gearbox on my corolla AE95 4wd wagon, so have to drop-out 4AFE engine and gearbox as one. Will be putting 4AGTE back in..

never dropped out an engine that had air-con hooked up to it before. I've just about disconnected everything around the engine excapt the subframe and air con.

Obviously the wagons undrivable, so can't take it to a shop to contain the a/c gas..

What are my options / ..best procedure for de-gassing and disconnecting the a/c system?

    Thanks - Jed

If the compressor will bolt to the 4AGTE, then you can leave it in the engine bay.

If it needs to come out, and you are environmentally conscious, then you can get a mobile guy to suck it out, otherwise...

Cruzida has hit the nail on the head. Whilst your engine is out clean the condensor and radiator as stated above (and new intercooler that will be going in), heaps easier to do a good job when you can access them from both sides

    Thank you gentlemen,
didn't realise it could be done as a mobile service.
A quick google search came up with plenty of options.

Looks like I can get the gas contained and my other semi daily re-gassed a t the same time. Cool!

As far as I'm aware re: 4afe - 4agte, the engine blocks a very similar, will have to take a closer look at the mounting points on each.

Update: just noticed you can also buy auto air con conversion kits and found a youtube tutorial.

Anyone have any experiece / recommendations using these??
