Hey guys, I have a jzx83 and it is auto. When it shifting through the gears under full acceleration, the engine dies as it is shifting... I'm guessing this is just a feature so it shifts smoothly, but is there a way around this?

Hi mate, there is no way around it. The feature is actually to save your torque converter and shift clutches, although yes does make it smoother as well.

In cost order.

1) Most expensive, do a manual swap.
2) Go full ECU swap with a computer that does auto. Adaptronic, blah blah...
3) Find a manual computer and buy a suprastick http://www.latentsolutions.com/suprastickuv.html
4) Find a manual computer and manualize your auto (many auto places can help with that).

Get a shift kit too for faster changes.

I have done the 1st and 3rd personally, went back to stock auto eventually as nothing beats the ride....

motor cuts the ignition, as said its there to save the g/box, it was programmed to occur on WOT gearshifts, its normal!

it becomes very evident when u chuck an exhaust on the car, u can hear it quite easily on gearshifts!!

if u back off at the right time, the motor will shift, turn the ignition off and be NOWHERE near the limiter...can get it happening @ ~6k in the risto! i dont mind the 'farting' noise, sounds kinda cool!

Yeah pretty good actually, programmable but comes with a base map. You will have to do some research if you want to start playing with it for gear changes and torque converter lockup/release etc.

Had a few bugs when I got mine around 5 yrs ago but worked with the guy giving him feedback. As it was developed for the Supra and I had a Soarer the main problem was the speed signal was different. Luckily having ABS I jumped on the Front right wheel sensor and that did the trick. Not ideal for track etc no problem for the road.

The biggest thing with the suprastick is the ability to either have it in full auto mode or switch it to manual mode, you hook up your cruise control stalk and you can use it to change gears.

I went one better and had a boss kit. I worked out how to send signals to the cruise control ecu (pretty simple) and bought a momo wheel with buttons on either handle. When in auto mode my buttons worked for cruise control (had to hook up a small button on the dash to turn on and off cruise mode and still use this setup with my steering wheel).

When I flipped a switch to manual mode I also changed the signals to go from cruise to the supra stick, and I could change gears with the buttons.

Anyhow all worked well apart from a few glitches that have been ironed out since then.

the chaser is the same, ignition cut on the upshifts, doesnt have to be WOT but its only when giving a few herbs.

Lets just say i have a not stock exhaust and when it upshifts with haste it pops pretty good carrots.

Get yourself a shift kit from MV Automatics in SA . Gets rid of that ccrappy farting on gear changes . And heaps faster shifts

You will have faster shifts but it will make no difference to the ignition being cut by the computer.

Nothing wrong with fast shifts though!

check out my thread the only way to fix it is to go manual shift, so when you change gear it does it straight away not 1-2 seconds later. mv's valve body also is recommended all depends on your budget. aftermarket computer will also help as wont take timing out on shifts.

My car doesnt do the ignition retard on gear shifts as teh shifts are instantanious ! WHeel spinning on the street in fact .

Im sure if the shifts are slow enough its probably still there , but since i installed the shift kit ive never heard that farthing ever again .

I have a switchable manual shift box , switches between full auto and full manualised . Shifts are identical speed wise in atuo or manual mode , Difference is in manual mode i shift it when i want it .

So Diesel after installing shift kit you don't notice the ignition retard on changes?

Maybe the ECU uses the revs to know when it has fully shifted into next gear and know when to give back the normal timing, and since you have a shift kit it changes much quicker the ECU doesn't cut the timing for very long? Just a thought.

None what so ever . Even at part throttle with boost , gear changes are instantaneous ... NO farting or popping on ANY gearchange .

If you have a lightly modded JZ your crazy if you DONT have a shift kit fitted .

Not only will your track times improve , It actually allows the transmission to safely handle alot more power . MV's will tell you a stock auto is good for 220rwkish whilst a shift kitted box with increased trans cooler will handle 270rwkw .

I ill say the that when i have the gearbox in manual mode with the switch box , there is definately no ignition issues on change as the ecu doesnt rtecognise the gearbox being in gear
