They arent as torquey as they feel hey.
They go alright but i thought they would have had closer to 300Nm and a bit more power than that.
Mums Avalon has a 1MZ and its got all its power right in a lump in the middle but its really cruisey to drive.
Wish I had a F#%ken awesome toyota.. saving for the goodness now.... stay tuned....
why do you want to make a old $500 camry go fast?
maybe a 3sze? 3sgte with the turbo swapped for a supercharger (sc14 would be fine). will give you maximum down low fastness. it should run just fine with the stock computer in theroy as your just swapping one blower for another. wont go aswell at high revs as with the turbo. if its running the stock amount of boost then it should be just as reliable as a standard celica. as im getting old im liking more and more the idea of having a standard motor in a daily driver (powerful std motor i mean) so mucking around with a 5s bottom end and bit from here and there isnt so appealing, thats more for the weekend thrash box as it doesnt matter if its crap to drive normally or breaks down.
IMO turbo is awesome for daily driving. if you are restrianed enough and dont have a horribly undersized engine, you can drive it around off boost all day to work and back. then when you want to go fast you just mash it. having a tuned N/a motor you often sacrifise all down low power. i got great economy from my silvia if i drove off boost. hoping to get OK economy from the 2j aswell, not quite so hopeful about that one.

the only reason i'm wanting more power is that i have never driven cars with such a low power out put..
Maybe i could just get use to it... then again i'm not that type of person to just give in.!!
i don't mind the wide body camry but it's what my partner really likes.. she had the choice of a new car and she wanted another camry.. like i said earlier, the car is immacuate condition other than the motor.
i've got to make a decision whilst the motor is out.. The bad thing is that my partner don't want a v6!!
So i'm realy thinking shaved 3sgte head(series 2 ?) and ported.. Thin HG and better pistons and just DEAL WITH THE LACK OF POWER!!!
thanking everyone again for there thoughts on topic...
Ask her why no to the V6 if she comes up with some lame female excuse put it in anyway and tell her its a V4 she probably wont notice the difference.![]()

i don't think there's an off the shelf high comp piston to suit the 5s.
you could shave the head and block some what to increase the CR. send a PM to terryo(aka road and track) and ask him what piston options there are.
really for the money i dont think id really bother on the 5s. everything really is a compromise. higher compression will mean you will have to run hi octaine if you already dont. more power = shorter engine life.
if you or your missus drive flat to the board all the time, then a v6 maybe more econimical as you can probably drive just as fast but at half the throttle.
im watching the old episodes of top gear and they demonstrated this quite simply. they drove a prius flatout around a track with a v8 M3 following behind matching is speed and the bigger more powerful car used less fuel as it wasnt working as hard. maybe food for thought. economy figures mean nothing in the real world, its all to do with the driver. hell i used to be able to get about 6~7L/100km out of my modified corolla, if i drove it super conservitively.
nah it sounds like a bit of fun actually
it seems funny that you say it has no low down grunt, perhaps the gearing is much different on my celica but i find that it goes rather well off the mark and then loses it in the mid/top. Off the mark its certainly quicker than my mates turbo skylineWhich is fun for a few seconds.
The engine that I've got in the car now is mostly stock, new headgasket and cleaned up the valves and stuff a year ago, got rid of the egr system, advanced the timing a touch , freed up the exhaust a bit. So basically all stock parts, and I'm quite happy with it.
i think if you are freshening the engine up you'll find it runs a heap better even in stock form and you might just be satisfied with it like that.
why "no v6"
surely not insurance reasons on a $500 car..
the fuel efficiency is fuck-all in terms of difference over the 4 - even closer when you consider the manner in which the two make power.
(the 6 doing it with less effort)
I think its possibly the most giant waste of money yet seen here... messing with a $500 dollar car isnt the biggest problem if it has the potential of some $500 cars like an old rolla or something.
Spending what will no doubt be at least twice if not four times that figure on working a 5S in a Camry is just well tell you what give me the money i'll fly east get some good grass and shout Tom a sesh its probably a more useful way of spending it..
Get a V6 or fix the dizzy and sell this "diamond in the rough" for a profit and buy a V6 camry. If its in as good condition as you say i see this as the smartest option.
You would be at least a grand up strait away instead of pissing money away on working a motor that is more than likely going to break with high performance bits attached to it.
My 2c.

sounds like it's bad idea then.. !!
i don't know sweet fark all about these motors. i like toyotas but never have had a car with injection or under 4lt's untill my missus came along.,,
any way i'll just freshen up another donk i bought today and slap it in!.. the camry(Apollo) she's driving now only produces power from 3500 up..But it does go good when it's up there!!
I just wanted something to spend money on... but then again you guys know what your talking about when it comes to these things.
So stock it is then.. And find something useful to blow money on![]()
Cheers
