If you want to waste some money, I believe you can use a Vortech on the 5s-fe.

But make sure your unit is in working condition, this one had a leak and shortly after the dyno the project was scrapped. I'm not sure, but I think Trent may still have the setup (the seals need replacing, there wasn't much else in terms of damage) lying about.

If you dont ask you'll never know dude thats what this place is all about.

Find her a nice cressi for a run about if you can get one in ok nick they are easily as nice if not nicer to drive than a Camry of that era.

Probably similar money to a camry a bit newer in good condition

So how much of an open budget is that?

If you want power, you can copy what I'll be doing for my AE101 Levin daily driver.

    Haltech ECU
Gen 4 3SGTE head (from a 2000 Caldina) ported, cams, etc etc
5S-FE bottom end with oil squirters installed
    Oversized pistons
    Metal head gasket
    H-beam rods
    Screw type supercharger
    4-1 tuned headers
    Water to air intercooler
15 - 20psi boost or so (pending power levels etc).
Plus whatever else I need or decide to install to crack 300kW ATW.

Won't be cheap or economical though....

lol; that engine in a widebody would be like Einsteins brain in the body of Jim Belushi.

I don't know why everyone is knocking the idea of more grunt in the camry?
Course I basically drive a camry wagon
I've heard of a full GT4 conversion (including 4wd) into a Camry before. And in these days of police cracking down on "hoons", a sleeper is a great idea.

The only use the 5S is for is to donate the crank for a 2.2 conversion on a 3S

    And what's this 3S + 5S = 4S crap

    There actually is a 4S-FE. It was in the ST170 & ST190 Corona/Caldinas. And it's a 1.8L

More grunt is great in pretty much anything, it's just that trying to improve the perfomance of a 5S-FE without major work (read: FI) is always likely to be a struggle.

3SGTE, either of the V6s or a beams motor would all go well though

    v6 + new headgasket + decent headstuds

= better outcome than spooging on a 5sfe.

my only queries would be the gearbox suitability and wiring.

I always thought that 3VZs were introduced into the Camry, so people trading out of MX83 Cressidas could feel comfortable knowing that thier new Camry would have head gaskets just as crappy as thier old Cressidas' did.

Give the V6 a miss, why would you screw around with wiring, radiator, plus God know what else to repower a $500 shitter, when you could buy the best one in Australia for 2 grand?

^^they were NA though i think^^ and therefore a bit too wet for importation.

this kind of reminds me of a dude down here who has one of the first gen magnas, strapping a massive snail to it (gt35+ big rear housing i think from memory), serious injection, forgies etc. Was his first car and he wants to do something with it.
This dude is a mechanic for a performance worlshop and has a decent car too.

    cressie is a good idea

just doing things like dr nick said is a good idea, cold air feed too maybe,

I like these budget build questions on stockys that no-one gives a rats about.

Do what the guys have said.
IE. Get your mate to do the porting & go the thinner HG, put the headers on.
    Here's some info:

    http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?...camry+manifold

Set up a cold air intake using pipes & rubber hose that start oversize & then taper down a bit to create a mild ramming effect.
Use some sheet metal to shield your intake from the radiant heat of the engine, to prevent heatsoak.
(Some people even insulate their fuel lines)

    Use autospeeds injector flow chart
    http://autospeed.com/cms/title_Injec...2/article.html
to find an injector that's very similar to yours, only 'slightly better'
(too much difference & you'll f**k with the ECU)

Then get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator to apply some back pressure to the injectors.
    http://autospeed.com.au/cms/title_Bo...6/article.html
(&/or to help with fine tuning)

Consider higher quality spark plugs to increase ignition time & while your at it you might like to consider using a higher grade of pump fuel.

Can you feel the revs now?

Maybe even adjust your dizzy timing to get the best down low power you can find.

Then change all your filters too.
    Oil, air, & fuel.

Not sure what's available for 5sfe pulleys either custom or from other engines but might be worth a look also..

Do all of that & you should see some pleasant gains from your sh*tbox daily that'll keep your wife happy for a wee while untill your need for real speed takes over.
