3T-GTE timming chain

It has come time to replace my timming chain on the engine as it is getting louder in the morning. How much work is involed in the procedure? And the cost ect? Iwas was told the 2tg timming chains were the same but not sure.

both will require surgery and you will need to remove the front timing cover from the motor.
both are interchangeable with 2T-G.

You can remove both without taking the head off IF you have 2 bolts instead of studs and nuts holding the front of the head onto the timing cover. Chances are they are studs and you will need to remove the head.

Once the head is off, remove the 4 x 12mm socket bolts that hold the front of the sump up on the timing cover and you should be sweet.

Of coarse you will need to drain coolant, remove crank pully, exhaust manifold off the exhaust ports and so on. You can leave the water pump on if you like but if it looks sus replace it. You could re-use the timing cover gaskets by using a bit of silicone, or else buy or make your own but make sure they make a proper seal cause your water pump depends on this.

Those are to suit 2TC / 3TC, not 2TG / 3TG.

I'd be pretty skeptical over whether you could use that in lieu of the lower timing chain and still run the factory upper timing chain assembly.

If the head does have come off, im thinking of chainging the lifters aswell and stronger vavle springs. Is there aftermarket lifters that are better then factory and valve springs as well. I know there are companies that do the springs for the 3tg, just dont know which ones.

you could probably use the BRD gear drive for the 2T-C/3T-C on the G's but you'd want to be certain that the allen key bolts clear the top timing chain and sprocket. If you want the proper stuff go Kameari gear drive.

Crow cams have a double valve springs that fit and they are suited for high lift cams. I have the part no. some where in my book.

Kameari = Japan.

you should also be able to remove those studs on the front of the timing chain using the old two-nut trick.... however its probably much easier just to remove the engine from the car and do the whole lot that way.

The gear drive will fit the 3T-GTE block. Could probably mock something up with my spare 3T-GTE block just for visual aids.

Since we're on topic about timing chains, I went to order the upper timing chain tensioner slipper from SW motor sports some time last year. They told me that you can't buy them from Toyota Japan anymore. So I'd hold on to the ones you have and get them re-coated if they're on their way out.

Yes the straight cut timing gear set that replaces the bottom timing chain does also fit a 3t-gte. I was running it on a 3t-gte in my ta22 but swaped engines because it was causing me all sorts of dramas. It was fuk'n noisy, caused vibrations and rattles. It was imposible to get the tension rite on the top chain to stop the rattles, to loose it would vibrate, to tight it would stall the engine! I wouldnt waste my time.
I tried to upload a photo of my engine with the timing cover off but it wasnt working, file size is probably to large!

It can be done with the BRD but you really got to know what you are doing and make sure everything clears.It is also LOUD!!
