So I'm looking at picking up an 3S-GE powered MR2, couple issues with it.
One : Worn 2nd syncros, not a big concern.
Two : Knock sensor has thrown a CEL code. Now from what I've read this is due to the knock sensor failing. It had failed previously and the owner installed a 2nd hand one from Road and Track in Brisbane. He says that the original was only 1 wire and the 2nd hand one is a 2 wire job. Does this sound right to anyone ?
He believes that it could be either his bodge wiring job to get the sensor working or the sensor crapping itself that threw the CEL code. From what I've read, the CEL will only display in the case of a failed knock sensor, not in the presence of knock. Is this also true ?
Lastly, should I take a new knock sensor with me and install before driving it home (4000km trip), or can I make it back and install the knock sensor on returing home ?
no that doesnt sound right at all. sounds like the stock one earthed throufh the engine (which im not sure is correct)
knock sensors are somewhat specific. you cant use any sensor off just anything.
light will show due to faulty knock sensor. not due to detection of knock.
you will be able to drive it with out the sensor, it will just pull all the timing and be gutless.
I DONT WORK FOR TOYOTA ANYMORE
please, no more PMs!
I haven't seen a two wire knock sensor.... all the ones I have seen have been 1 wire.

Thanks for the links Wilbo666, I'll check them out. I'll get the correct spec knock sensor and wire it up before doing the trip I'm thinking.
