Hey guys,
What is everyone using for there clutch slave and master cylinder on the 1G powered RA23/28's ??
I need to get a new clutch slave cylinder for the RA28 and may as well get a new master while I am at it if there is a better option than the stock one.
part numbers would be great if you have them
Thanks,

Im using the stock 28 MC and the gx81 slave which came with my w58. Seems to work well and went together very easily.
Good luck.

I have the original TA23 master cylinder and the slave that came with the j160. When I had the w58 I used the slave that came with the ga70.
Craig
When I fitted the engine out of the GA70, the clutch line came straight out of the stock master cylinder and interfered with the standard intake pipe.
I tried both a 18R hilux master cylinder and the GA70 master, but neither fitted. The bolt pattern in the celica is vertical, the others are on an angle. Also, IIRC, the celica uses studs on the sheetmetal and the others uses nuts ot vice versa... but I could be mistaken.
But then i realised that you can easily rotate the front housings on the standard turbo and now the standard M/C clears easily
So I'm using the standard RA28 master cylinder, and I think it's the standard GA70 slave. no drama's with that setup.
mm ok,
I have been using the Stock RA23/28 master cylinder and a slave cylinder that came on the W55 that was on it.
What I am after is a replacement part number (aftermarket) for the slave cylinder and to see what else people had settled on.
I thought I would see what everyone else was using as the masters are a 5/8 bore and the slaves are 13/16. My clutch pick up point is right down at the floor and I was hoping to bring it up higher buy fitting a smaller bore slave cylinder to achieve a better ratio of travel between the slave and the master.
Craig,
Did you know the J160 slave is a much larger bore (15/16 bore or there abouts) ?
I don't get enought travel on the slave at all when I use that one. I have a 2nd hand one on my spare 6 speed and I tried it on the 28 on Saturday.

Can you recall whether the W50 slave would bolt up to the W55 to bring them back in line diameter-wise?
My clutch is a bit lower, but certainly not objectionable.

I didn't realize that. I can't remember it feeling any different to the W58 although that is to be expected 'cos I have a booster on the clutch because of high clutch pressure (and the firewall flexing). Would love to get rid of it (the booster) but think that I will have to go to multiplate clutch configuration to overcome the problem. I currently have a button clutch and I had the TRD coverplate remanufactured. It come with the gen 3 engine, along with the very light flywheel.
If it has got a bigger bore it might be interesting to have a look at at lexus 200 master cylinder!
Craig,
I had a TRD pressure plate behind my 1G when I bought it off Darren. Unfortunatly it was not up to the task tho. It tested fine but did not deal with high rpm high boost 2-3 gear changes. My first two clutch disks glazed over inside a few thousand k's.
I thought I was going to have to buy a twin plate but thankfully I spoke to the guys at Xtreme clutch and sent them over the my TRD one as a sample and they put a package together for me. It is a Ceramic Dampened Solid Button and so far it has been great.

My clutch seems to work well. The new one has only been in several 1000's ks - insatlled it with the new engine package in mid 2004. Seemed to handle things well at Wakefield last week. And I just spent all my spare money on new rims and race rubber (and of course on bits for the Thunderbird which seems to be a bigger money black hole than the Celica, but will I have a great tow car or can put the Celica in the boot).
I paid a visit to my brake man today and had a better look at my car. I am using the clutch cylinder out of the GA70 as it has a mounting spot for the heat shield. I am pretty sure that I am using the slave off the j160.
I borrowed a larger master off a Crown, that has the same bolt pattern, however I could not keep the heat shield as it stands and the way the turbo is set up there is no room, and I seem to recall the was also the case with the standard twins. I will get hime to have a further look in the catalog to see if there is something physically smaller.
What he did suggest is that he could bore the original which would allow me to go up a size on the slave. This does seem like the best option.

Could you tell me which way yours is, i want to know how yours differs to mine?
I wanted to use my GA70 master, so if I can find out what you did to fit yours it would help.
Cheers,
Tim
Rod, did you have any luck with a matching master that bolts up?
Now that you've brought my attention to it... i can't drive without noticing the long travel on the clutch.Damn you!

The reason I don't think that the GA70 is an option is because of the mounting bolts.
These are photos of the RA28, and the bolts are vertically inline.
I can't find my GA70 cylinder (I think I lost it, or sold it because it didn't fit), but here are the pics out ot the parts catalogue... and you can see the bolts are on an angle.
Craig, can you can confirm whether your bolt holes are straight, or on an angle. Pics would be good![]()
Timbo,
I haven't actually seen my RA28 for quite a while now as my Garage has a certain board members engineless GT4 still in it. Thankfully a fellow Toymodder has been housing the 28 for me but while it was away anyway its been getting some work done. It has just had some minor rust that was starting under the front windscreen repaired, The new screen rubber and windscreenclips go back in tomorrow and then its off to the trimmers for a new roof lining and A pillar trims.
Once I get it home tho the clutch master/slave combo is the first thing I will be working on.

Toyman75 I'm thinking what you are thinking, "kinda (3T)", am
hopeful someone can help, I am buying manuals but no luck yet.
What are the sizes of the master and slave in a original RA28.
My RA28 (I am finishing another blokes conversion) now has a 3T
and W55 I am wondering what car did they came out in and what
master and slave did they have. Example MC-5/8 and S-13/16.
Thanks

SA63 slave worked OK for me...
Rod....
come around to my garage to have a look at the RA28 if you like.
I've got both the original RA28 master and RA28 (w50) slave fitted to my W58/18RGE combo.
The PBR W50 slave is a handy little fucker... cos it has adjustment nuts on it to get the right clutch "grab" height with the pedal. I had to modify it a little (cut down the threaded shaft)... but it works pretty well.
It works for me cos im using a 22R bellhousing... i dont know how the mounting pattern differs to a 1G bellhousing.
The other option of course is using the adjusters on the master cylinder actuator arm... but not sure if that will help much. Your clutch does grab quite close to the floor from memory.
...... butt scratcher?!
Karl,
I already use the thread adjustable pushrod from a TA22 to get the length. I just dont get a travel ratio I like between the stock master cylinder and the CLutch slave.
Is there an online catelogue for this stuff anywhere ? I need to fix the fucker.
