Hey guys been doing some thinking on how to reduce body roll in my dual cab 2wd hilux, its like driving a scool bus.My noob question is would welding a steel brace between chassis rails at the back do any good? or any other suggestions? Im thinking along the lines of strut braces in cars although as its leaf sprung am unsure how to stiffen the rear up
Thanks for any input
wishing i lived in nsw so i could give gun and drifty some decent competitions......
dont confuse body stiffness with body roll.
what size anti roll bars does it have? these are also known as stabiliser bars or sway bars, and resist body roll.
read up on the basics of suspension, google the above and look around.
buy a 4wd one and embrace the roll.
we 4wders dont call it roll, its called flex
new shocks would probably be a start if you do want to stop it
it may not seem like it but i appreciate all the help you guys give!

haha well flex, roll, schoolbus its all the same, nah like the 2wd its undergoing heart surgery at the moment in the form of 1uzfe engine im suffering withdrawal
ahhh, ur one of those types(dont worry, i drive a nissan patrol, im just bitter
)
well, im assuming your lowering it, and im going to assume you were planning on using lowering blocks?
can i suggest taking it to a suspension shop and talk to them about setting your leaves properly and recomending i good shock for your purpose, which will erradicate alot of roll, and if u still want stiffer, then uprade swaybars etc.
replacing all bushes can help too.
swaybars should really be the last thing, not the first, its just a patchup

yeah, you need the body roll to help get one wheel spining round cornersi thought body roll in a 2WD ute was a design feature not a flaw?![]()

The bodyroll is great in my RN41! Fishtails like a mofo in the wet ...
HD torsion bars, thicker swaybar, reset the leafs in the rear rather than using lowering blocks - should all help a little.
At the end of the day it's still a commercial vehicle.
haha thanks for your help guys, might go and see they guys at morses under car.
I object to it being called a commercial just doesnt fit the bill, yes there are plans to lower it and go lsd so i will post some pics when its finished
it might look like a car, but its built like a truck. make no mistake. it will, and until you throw alot of money at it, will always handle like a commercial vehicle. but you can get the best out of it. isnt that what its all about![]()

i have a set of koni adjustable shocks in mine and it handles a lot better
PM esteban to get his flatmate's contact details - he has lowered his 2WD hilux and changed the carrying capacity so he could run low profile rims/rubber etc (and he got the changes engineered to make it mostly legal).
i like the term "mostly legal" im unsure as to how far im going to go asthetically, as in my opinion something that is a sleeper is better than advertising whats under the bonnet. All go no show as oposed to all show no go. But in saying that i have my eye on some 5zigen rims that wud look good.
Once you pop u cant stop
i got electric shocks in the rear of my RN41.. switch in the cab to work them.Originally Posted by Pure_In_Sanity

thermo fans n the like.
the locker in the Diff and the 5.8Litres of gas guzzling power helps fry tyres
no single peggers for me.
got 16" AU Pursuities for it.. just need to fit them and lower it at the front.. the rear is pretty stiff atm..

What generation is your Hilux? Toyota softened the suspension for the 4th and 5th generations (97/98 onwards). My 94 2WD single cab only gets body roll if the shocks are worn out. You could try King Springs Supa Lows with a Whiteline rear swaybar, but start with new shocks and poly-urethane bushes. If you put H/D torsion bars in the front as I have you will need a kidney belt. Even the smallest bump in the road will jolt you. There are a few coil-over conversions getting done around the place now, so that may be an option too.

02 model mate so gen 5? Thankyou for all the input have now got some good ideas to tinker with![]()
'02 would be gen 4. Gen 3 is '89 to '96/'97. Gen 4 is '96/97 to '05. Gen 5 is the current incarnation. Memory's faded a bit on the subject but I think this is pretty close to right.
