    Default Differences between 1uz models?

    Hi,

Ive just bought a 1UZ on ebay, its stated that the engine is the higher powered engine with 10.4 compression. Are there any markings externally that can be used to verify this before i hand over the cash?

    Cheers

Fuel rails will be cast alloy instead on billet alloy.
Thats the easiest test. (billet alloy is 90-94 @ 10.0:1)
Apart from that there is no CSI under the intake manifold (on the later model ones), but thats not easy to find.

    90-94 = 10.0:1
    95-97 = 10.4:1
    98+ = 10.5:1 (and VVTi)

doesnt the 90-94 one use a kick down cable off teh throttle, and the 94+ one utilize a pressure switch for teh auto

There are a lot less 1989 models compared to the rest, so I rarely use the '89, but they are identical to '90. (Celsior wasnt in production until mid 89, the Crown a few months later)

ALL auto trannys with an E on the end (A43DE, A341E, A650E) do not have a kickdown cable. Kickdown is controlled by the TPS (and sometimes a microswitch under the accel pedal).
The cable is a Shift Pressure Cable (tighter the cable, the harder the shifts).
I don't know if the 95-97 has this cable though.

But by far the easiest method to tell are the fuel rails.
All the intake manifold stuff is the same (cept the CSI), exhaust manifolds are too hard to tell.

The later model ones come with a different airflow meter. The early ones have a grey alloy meter the later ones have a black one.

That's because the early one is Karman Vortex and the later is MAF right?

Well I know the early one is definetly Karman Vortex, because it doesn't work with the Jaycar DFA. The later one definetly does, because it was the test car for the kit. By extension, they have to be different in more ways than just colour.

pre '94 - metal vacuum pipes around front of plenum
    '94 + no pipes there

Also the higher compression engines have lighter but weaker rods/pistons

I know the VVTI engines got much weaker rods, but i thought all before VVTI were the same beefy ones?

Ok well ive bought the engine.. is there a way to tell what model it is and compression etc from the serial number? also can anyone confirm or deny the 10.4 comp non vvti had weaker internals?

No way to tell from the engine number unless you find someone with an earlier number who knows for sure they have a late model engine.
