Default whats this gizmo? (under 20v throttles)

When I was working on my 20V head I had a close look at this vacuum solenoid that is underneath my throttle linkages. I connected a vacuum pipe to it and sucked on the pipe, when I did this the solenoid moved down which allowed the throttle to move to a more closed position. The thing is that the throttles are already against the stop and I see no way that this device can do anything. I would like to know, what exactly is this thing meant to do, how is it meant to work and can I get rid of it?

    well heres a pic anyway:

Im not too familiar with 4A's... but my guess is its used for high-idle (for cold-starts & air-con).
I could be completley wrong tho.

while that would be a good guess (and my first guess) it actually moved in the wrong direction for that. Unless its always in untill it needs to raise the idle

ive also wondered what that is on mine, but i think if its not broken to not mess with it
though cold start idle could be in right direction ?

I think it is something that doesn't allow the throttles to "snap" closed super fast. It only allows them to move the last little bit as the vacuum increases. Something to do with emissions (and conceivably tuning) I think.

Maybe yours aren't properly adjusted if they can't ever reach the throttles.

I think I might get under mine if possible (doubt it) and undo it to see what happens. The reason I want it gone is because that picture is of the engine I am building up. I am going for the simple means more reliable approach.

1G's have one of them too. I also think it is a dampener to slow the throttle when it closes so it doesnt just slam shut.

thats correct its stop the car from stalling when the throttles shut and the vac goes stupidly high to the point the engine cant breath.

I removed it from my 1G and it has not effected it at all.

its the dashpot system. yeh its to stop the throttle being snapped shut, allowing fuel to be completely burnt. part of the emissions system. surprising to hear some toyotas dont have them, everyone ive seen uses one

well thanks to everyone guys, as usual I am impressed. If I can unplug this thing I will see how it goes without out and post my results on here.

well I am rebuilding an engine and I want to keep things as simple as possible for reliabity and neatness. Chances are I will just leave it but I want to know if I want to that I have the option there.

I know that might sound stupid but I want to know eveything I can with this engine as I build it. The more I know the better I can make it.

thats cool. i just prefer to leave things like that the way they are factory (causes less headaches)

    fair enough

well I managed with some difficult to reach under and unplug mine last night, and I felt not one little bit of difference, well that proves that theory. Also my other reason is I may not of received those hard lines under the throttles with my second 20v so I can see if its possible to go without.

When I first got my blacktop running with an aftermarket computer (Stinger)
I was finding that, due to this thing, when starting it up, it would always rev itself up to over3000rpm before dropping down to idle (presumably not being controlled or adjusted properly for the non-factory computer).

I found this really annoying, so I disabled it (I forget how), and then it was a little harder to start, but at least it no longer did that embarrasing uncontrollable rev-up on startup.
