hey i'm just wondering if anyone knows where the intake air temperature sensor is on the 22RE?

The funny shaped contraption attached to the airbox. The plug that goes to it does airflow, fuel pump switch and temp. Are you thinking of trying to stick a resistor in it or similiar? You can make much bigger changes by removing the airlfow meter lid, and fiddling around with the knob inside there - don't expect to start making massive power gains though!

Performance chip = 30c resistor you just paid $30 for.

its meant to put about 20-30 extra hp depending on the car.

    You were fed lies. Sorry.

The purpose of the device you have is to fool the engine computer into thinking the engine is cold all the time, so it will increase fuel flow to the engine and make the air/fuel ratio (AFR) richer. The theory is that richer AFR's will make your car perform better, which sounds plausible to someone who doesn't know about engines - but the reality is, richer AFR's will actually make the engine perform worse and dramatically increase fuel consumption to boot.

The only sensible option is to put your "performance chip" where it belongs - in the bin. You have absolutely nothing to gain by putting it anywhere near your engine. Sorry if you got ripped off, but if it makes you feel any better you're far from alone - there's a whole range of these bogus "performance products" out there and people keep snapping them up.

*gives celica RA65 a big hug*
sorry to hear you got done

fiddle with the AFM switch, rip off the pollution gear, new air filter (by this I mean the pape element, not a ricer pod filter - altho the induction noise of a 22r with a pod is GREAT), put new sparks and oil in... these are the best low level mods for the 22R

You'll save money on towing....not to mention all the extra time you'll have not spent working on it.

    Norbie,

To the best of my knowledge, these are for the air intake temp sensor, which fools the ecu into thinking the air is colder, thus adding some more timing, and producing more power.

However, this can (and will) make the engine ping on hot days.

    22R needs no help pinging...

Ah I see, a different variation on a dodgy theme - except this is even worse because pinging can lead to permanent engine damage!

Next thing - Celica 22R 'ECU' has no control on timing... So drowning it with further fuel is hardly going to improve anything except spark plug sooting.

I dunno how right you are about that. This is true with the american earlier celicas. But the ra65 I noticed when wireing up my megasquirt that there was actually timing control done by the computer. Switched on vac switches that turned on or off the advance on the dizzy. Its even marked on the board of the ecu.

But yeah I agree with you on not playing with the mixture. If anything a stock ra65 needs to be leaned out a bit I think.
