    Default w series gearbox swap - 50 to a 55

    Hey people,

My w50 sitting behind the 18r-c in my RA28 lost 5th and is deteriorated elsewhere so its gotta come out.

Now Ive got a w55 sitting at a mates place waiting to go behind a 3tgte once its ready but im hoping that all i have to do is swap the bell housing as th 55 has a T series bellhousing and the w50 has an R series one. From memory they are exactly the same but I would just like to confirm it.

    Can anyone verify this?

    Cheers

Need the complete setup from a 20+ R series engine, ie 20 (USA only) 21R 22R.

Complete setup from a manual RA60, bellhousing, clutch ass. etc

    Your kidding!

Just to clarify the 55 is going behind the 18r as a temporary fix till the 3tgte is ready and aren't the w series boxes externally identical. But if not can you tell me why?

    thnx

the w55 is all alloy case, the w50 is all cast steel case. w50, w55, w57 are all the same ratios basically, its only the w58 which differs - longer overdrive.

w52 out of hilux has shorter gearing.

and the bolt pattern for the bellhousings to the box are different also.
The W50 has a square style bolt pattern and the W55-58 has an upside down horseshoe shape.Hope this clarifies a few things for you.
    Cheers Brett.

thats interesting, in which case the w52 looks identical to a w50, (cast iron etc) so id assume its the same pattern?

    Thanks Guys,

I guess its off to the wreakers a-hunting bits i go, I'll just have to tighten the belt and do it.

Means less money to spend on the rebuild of the 3tgte which is what i was hoping to avoid

    Thanx

why not just get another W50? or a W40? if it's only temporary i wouldn't go blowing money on it.

Thats the plan!! I know where i might get one too, unfortunately it will get spent out of my seat and x-member fund.

Im almost tempted to take it as a sign and pull it off the road and ramp up my engine swap.

If you're upgrading to a 3T you'll need to do a transmission swap anyway as there are no bellhousings to mate a W50 to a T block. The alloy-case W5x boxes are much nicer anyway.

Yes there is! Just probably never imported to Australia.
I have several of these. I use one of these to mate 1G and P51.

Hi, anyone know where to get one of these bellhousings?
It'd be nice to mate my w50 to my 1GGTE?

whats the benifit of using a w50 over a w55 if it isnt cost? considering youd have to import the bellhousing.

and i got a W55 takin up space if anyone needs it, needs shifter bushes. not mine but i want it gone

No beneifit, just trying to minimise the cost of the whole conversion. What condition is the w55 in (bearings), how much, and where are you located?
