Default Which 4x4 transmission should I use

I'm looking for a 5 speed manual with full time 4wd and drivers side drop.

It needs to be able to handle a very healthy supercharged 1UZ.

I'm open to suggstions as to which box and what it came out of.

    Thanks.

Maybe one from a UZJ100 Landcruiser? Or are you looking for something a little smaller/friendlier? e.g. GTR box with aftermarket innards.

I'm looking for something that will bolt in and handle a bit of abuse and at least 500lbft torque.

    The vehicle weighs 1850kg.

I'm not looking for the ultimate shift and I won't race it (other than a pass or two down a drag strip) so shift speed isn't my top priority.

Im not sure if you mean 4wd or Awd but assuming you mean 4wd then I would say an 80 series landcruiser box would suit your needs. DS drop, full time 4wd, beefy enough for your needs (and can be made beefier pretty easily) and think how good it would be selecting low range and frying the tyres

If you not interested in anything but driving and drag strip, and you even get close to 500ft/lb of torque, then i would be looking at modding an auto 4wd setup that came out behind a 1uz.
As the main abuse will be on the drag strip, with upgraded clutch packs/shift kit and cooler the 4wd setup should be ok!

The 1UZ auto will be gone to God with 500lbft of torque.

The vehicle will see a little off road work but is more the family convertible (it hasn't any roof or doors) but I would like to see what it can do fon the drag strip.

Any idea of the the trans code for the 80 series 5 speed with full time 4x4.

i personally wouldn't want to drag a convertible 4WD with that much power without a decent rollbar

The strongest 5 speed cruiser box is the H151F found in the diesel 80 series.
The diesel AND petrol 5 speeds in the 100 series cruisers are substantially weaker.
A lot of the hungie and 80 series guys swap them in when they get serious and their boxes go bang.

H151F is by far the box you want. Don't waste your time with anything less, unless you wanna go built auto.

    Cheers

    Joe,

The vehicle is an old Australian Safari competition vehicle ad the roll cage is CAMS approved. The cage is stronger then the original body ever would have been.

    Gabe,

So the diesel H151F it is.

    Now to find one!

The unsupercharged engine is in and has been running for a couple of years.

Here's a photo of the supercharger on a spare engine.

Thats because they are R151F's (or at least the one I drive is).

The supercharger is an Opcon 222 on a Richwood manifold with a Richwood drive system. The blower is geared for 18lb but we're looking at upping that to 26lb when things are sorted.

    The engine will run:
    Ross 8.5:1 pistons
    Argo rods
    Kelford cams & springs
    ARP fasteners right thru
    Ported heads
    13/4" modified Tex headers
3" exhaust with 2 hi flo cats
    Adaptronic ECU
    RX7 injectors
    Cometic h/gs
    Snow II water/meth inj

I have all of the above on the shelf to go.

Expected output is around 520hp and over 550lbft torque.

I need to decide who to entrust the engine build to and away it goes. So I'm open to suggestions.

I'll say go for the H151F from a V8 100 series Cruiser wagon if you can find one -$$$. Toyoya don't release the manual anymore for the V8 but they were available. This should bolt straight up to the 1UZ. This box is still used today in the TD wagons(H151F) and TD utes/PC's(H150F - lower 1st, taller 5th). The R151F is used the NA Diesel wagons and utes/PC's only.
As the 100 series cruisers weigh nearly 2.7tons and have a towing capacity of 3.5tons then this box should be up to what you want hopefully.
MX83 1UZ Conversion. UZZ31 engine, UCF10 Sump, UZS131 Tranny and engine fan idler. Custom exhaust and 147rwKWs.
