YellowRolla,
Certainly intend to reinstall them or as you say install a bearing, that is rotated to block the hole.
Thanks
Roger
I use the 7M GTE studs - I am sure that I have posted the part numbers in this thread - anyway 203-5402 is the ARP part number.
There should be 3 of those rods blocking the original cam bearing oil holes. They need to be re-installed OR you need to install new bearings that have been rotated to block the oil holes OTHERWISE oil pressure will be non existent.

YelloRolla's KE20 1/4mi = 11.32 @ 119mph @ 22psi on slicks
12.44 @ 113 mph on 165 wide street tyres
210rwkw - not bad for a smelly 3TGTE running pump fuel.
YellowRolla,
Certainly intend to reinstall them or as you say install a bearing, that is rotated to block the hole.

Hi guys, engine is in bits at the mechanics. He has given me a list of what parts are needed.
Are any of the following available from anywhere BUT original Toyota parts?:
- Mains 0.25mm (listed on SWMotorsports)
- Bigs 0.25mm
- Aux Shaft Bearings (standard) (SWMotorsports only has 2TG listed for this)
- Timing Chains
- Sprockets
- Guide Rails
- Standard Thrust Washers (SWM has 'Bearings Main Bearing Thrusts' not sure if this is the same thing)
- Timing Chain tensioners
keeping in mind that I'm using 86mm Wiseco pistons and eagle rods from BRD.
Sorry for being so noob, but I've never done an engine rebuild before and trying to communicate as best i can with mechanic.

Basically most things you want will be avaliable from SWMotorsports, if they don't have it chance are no one else will either, other places to try IDB in richmond melbourne, sleeka spares pooraka Adelaide
I have comments next to your shopping list below.
[QUOTE=steeko;1143272]- Mains 0.25mm (listed on SWMotorsports)
- Bigs 0.25mm (AKA conrod bearings listed on SWMotorsport)
- Aux Shaft Bearings (standard) (SWMotorsports only has 2TG listed for this, you can use the 2tg bearings or use 3tc cam bearings)
- Timing Chains (these are avaliable from SWM)
- Sprockets (not sure you ma have to get these off toyota or second hand)
- Guide Rails (some are avaliable from SWM but maybe not all)
- Standard Thrust Washers (SWM has 'Bearings Main Bearing Thrusts' not sure if this is the same thing? Yes these are the same thing)
- Timing Chain tensioners (are avaliable from SWM)

steeko,
your engine builder scares me.
Other than the sprockets, tensioner and guides his regulare parts supplier will have everything he needs. 3tc bearings and thrust washers are basically the same. He may at worst have to relocate the oiling hole in the bearings but since your using 3tc eagle rods they will probably match up just fine.
The timing chain is also available aftermarket. Its the same link as in most early toyota twin cams so can be bought in bulk or to length.
Do you really need new sprokets ?
Swm is a great place for guys with nfi or to get those hard to find bits that you didn't know where to look for as he should have everything you need. That convenience comes at a price tho.

thanks for the help guyswill give SWM a call for the bits.
Engine builder was going to local toyota parts who pretty much just said "no" to everything.

Hi,
I have just been speaking to my engine builder, he is having a hard time getting the rods out that block the oil galaries on the last three cam bearings, my engine is being cleaned and would like to get these out. Do these screw out? if not does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get them out?
Roger
Got some more info from mechanic and now ready to order pistons.
I read that the 3tGTE has a stock compression ration of 7.5:1.
Wiseco pistons come in 7.5:1 and 7.1:1, just wondering which is better to use?
To go lower than stock? As I read that lower compression is better on a turbo engine.

stock is 7.8:1 compression afaik.
it seems back in those days, using cast pistons with low compression to make them boost friendly was the way to go. but with forged pistons, unless you're running stupidly high boost, then see if you increase compression for better off boost drivability. are there any 8.5:1 pistons available?

This is what's available from BRD:
7.1:1 7.5:1 8.1:1 and 8.5:1
I am building the engine for reliability (daily driver). So massive power is not my focus.

FYI, contacted Greenline to get a price on a HKS MLS head gasket for the 3TGTE and this was their reply:
"Unfortunately item has been discontinued and there is no longer any stock available."
Any alternatives?

go the higher compression IMO, make it more driveable off boost.
read on some honda forums about this same question.
The general opinion seems to be you only gain around 5hp off boost by going to the high-comp pistons.

That "general opinion" from the Honda forums is qualified by what? Sticking your finger in your ass then pulling it out for a sniff? Sounds like a BS random comment to me.........

i built a engine with the 8.5 pistons and drove it n/a and it ran awesome. i'm planning on running big boost and the 8.5 i'll have no trouble doing it. i have another mate running the same pistons on stock turbo and is pushing comfortably 150 to 160 rwkw on 14 psi boost. Definitely go the 8.5.
Are you changing any other engine parts such as rods, head bolts etc?
