Hi folks
I have a camry sv21 with s53 gearbox thats been troubbling me for a long time. First it was kinda hard to gear from 1 to 2nd, but now its not hard to shift anymore, but it jumps out of 2nd everytime i let go of the throttle.
i looked at engine and gearbox mounts, shift transfer cables etc, but i dont see anything specific thats wrong.
Is this a problem with something inside the box, for example synchro rings? if anyone has some information on what usually makes this problem im greatfull for any help.
Im planning on installing a new clutch in a few days, and i have decided to open the box too then if its something thats pretty easy to repair.
any help, info, tips and tricks about the problem or about opening the gearbox, are very welcome![]()

I would say at a guess the drive (syncro dogs) dogs are plain worn out, normally they have a bias on them that holds them in harder with load and over time this bias wears out and they will jump out instead (can happen both decel and accel). Jap import gearboxs arnt expensive for these old girls, give our forum sponsor (Andrew at CENTRAL VICTORIAN AUTO PARTS) and get a price off him and tell him that Travis sent ya!

Thanks for your answer.
If its the synchros thats worn out, how difficult is it to change them?
Im not in australia, so it will be too expensive getting a box from there, but thanks for the offer.

Ahh, sorry didnt see you location, not hard as long as you are methodical and have a idea what you are doing, would prob still be cheaper to buy another from the wreckers out of a camry or celica though.
