21R-C is also the same - take the dissy, ignitor and coil and put the guts from the dissy into your 18R dissy.
I've covered this one a few times now![]()

WOW, that was fast!
thanks guys ill check it out very very soon!
is the 21R-C or 21R the same as a 22RE? because i have a 85 Corona here and wondering if its the same or similar...
is it an easy conversion or a little tricky? can i get some info on how to hook it up properly power wise? will i have to get a new coil?
Cheers friendly men!

oh yeah,
before i forget the 22RE engine is screwing up big time, no low end power at all! maybe lament on fuel pump or filter? struggles up the slightest of hills!
thanks once again, if any one needs info on escorts im your man!

You bought this car off ebay recently didnt you?
I saw it, looked like a nice little escort, but the engine is what made the car!
The 21R/22R dissy conversion is a piece of piss. Really. You will see when you get all the parts together. Yes the 22r and 21r dissys are the same for this intended purpose.
Your 22R is a POS. Apply napalm liberally and stand a safe distance.
P.S. gimme your 18rgeu.

the igniter from a 5M-E (found in MX62/MA61/MS112 etc) works with the genuine 18RG dizzy pickup or the 21/22r pickup
hello
Yeah man,
off eBay, was a pretty mad deal! i cant believe (now) that i ever hesitated! anyways, i had 2 2 door mk2s before that one, which were worked kent 1600 x flow and pintos, so im not some poser kid who bought a complete HM escort to be different, i am an enthusiast and have the garage to prove it! when i post pics after i clean it up ill post the engineers cert as well, hilux brakes and master cylinder, DATO booster, hilux clutch, sprinter 4 speed, RS2000 diff, works 4 pot calipers on the front and hilux drum on rear, capri V6 struts, the list goes on and on and on.......
is the 22R-E really that bad? we had one in there and it died after about 250k+ kms, and we bought a full reco engine (slightly newer 22R-E from a hilux) for about $1000 and installed it at home, was running great untill just recently it started stalling on the idle and wouldnt start, fixed that and now there's no power! WHATS UP??? please tell me!
ill get onto the dizzy transplant right away!
thanks so much for your help! toyota and escort owners are no joke some of the nicest people out!

P.S - The Witzl, i email you about the super charger, i have a newer model 18rg with the pistons you didnt say not to put the supercharger with? its like a (blah blah)3? what do you mean you want my 18rgeu, its just a plain one! check ebay, they somtime have them, no joke! interstate though....
I think Karl normally does buy up the ones on ebay... and any other 18RG which ever turns up. He pretty much has the worlds biggest 18RG collection methinks. I think you mean you have an 88253 head, which means you have an 18RGU, with 9.3:1 pistons. its the early 88230 and 88210 headded 18RGs with 9.7:1 pistons that superchargers dont work well with.Originally Posted by ROHANVII

Hi,
I always thought the 18R-GU was 8.7:1 c/ratio? But then again, I may be wrong.

unfortunatley in this case, you are correct.Originally Posted by river
What you want to avoid doing is putting the supercharger together with any engine that doesnt have EFI, and where possible try to use it on lower compression pistons. The 9,7:1 pistons (from the early 18R-Gs) would be a little too high in the compression range to whack on the supercharger without some very good aftermarket engine management and tuning - unless you want to detonate!!Originally Posted by rohanvii
I want your 18R-GEU.... just cos! I check ebay everyday for 18R-Gs, but only ever bought one off there
.... ok maybe i have a few.... i've only got 5 at the moment i think, and one of them is Norbies, and one is Lambolica's (on loan).... but i do have 3 of my ownOriginally Posted by Owen

hello
hey,
just another quick query, please do not take offence!
i heard that alot of toyotas twin cam engines, such as 4age, 4agte, 4agze etc and other 1600/2000s are "copies" (or inspired by) Ford BDA engines (the self-appointed strongest 4cylinder ever made), as seen in ford sierra, escort and cosworths...
is this true? im not at all bagging out toyotas, after all, i have a toyota engine, and it's more responsive and powerful than any ford 4cyl i've ever driven!
can someone enlighten me?
thanks!

i think toyota started down the twincam route VERY early on and has pretty much lead its own direction of development and innovation, and provided their results to the mass public. To compare to the BDA engines is a bit tough, i thought they were custom built/designed race engines - very unlike the toyota mass production engines!
I dont think you could say Toyota copied anyone really.
