Default Crank angle sensor for 3T GTE

    Hi all,
I'm in the process of getting more power from my 3T GTE. One of my plans is to build a custom intake manifold.
SO, the stock dizzy has to go to make room. After a bit of searching and machining work I have build my own CAS inside the stock dizzy. I still haven't fitted it to my engine but its ready to go.

Check this link for info, might come it handy for those advanced DIY owners.

    http://users.chariot.net.au/~stmezz/cas.htm

This is a pic of the final product. I also made a aluminium cover for it, not shown in the pic.

    Cheers,
    Simon

Hey Simon couldn.t you have just modified the standard dizzy to give you a pickup for engine position and hence run electronic ignition. Kudo's for being different anyhow.

Yes, thats how it is now as direct fire injection.

But I want full sequential injection and no stock dizzy to make way for a front entry throttle body so I have to have a crank angle sensor.

    Simon

    Simon,

On that topic, I am purchasing a Microtech LT10s for my 3T-GTE. I just wanna run Direct fire ignition with individual coils.

Apart from locking the mech advance, do I need to grind off the pickups on the dizzy so theirs only 1, or do I keep all 4 points for more accurate reading..

I havn't really understood how it works, because I though the computer needed to know where TDC was, but with your current setup that controlled fuel/ignition dunno how it knows TDC from the pickups on the standard dizzy....

    Clarification wouid be great.

I'm in the same boat as i have ditched the dizzy and have a new intake manifold with front positioned throttle body. However, i haven't done anything to the dizzy to use it as a pickup for the electronic ignition.

From what i understood, you could use the standard dizzy without the cap and modify it and use it as the pickup for engine position. I have seen this done on a starlet and i think it had to be modified to run 4 teeth.

What i dont understant is why the 3s dizzy over the 3t one especially when your just after a pickup? Was the 3t unable to give a pickup or was it just easier to modify the 3s one?

OK, with my current direct fire injection the ECU doesn't know when the engine is at TDC. Thats why the 3T GTE dizzy isn't any good.

If you want a set up like mine (current) then you just lock the stock dizzy and use the stock coils. No other mods are needed.

BUT if you want one coil per plug or sequential injection the ECU needs to know when the engine is a TDC. This is why I used the 3S GTE dizzy as it has the 24 tooth wheel and reference point so the ECU will know where TDC is.
I haven't got it running yet, but will update my site with the results when I get around to finsihing it. My plan is to use 1 coil oer plug, front mounted throttle body and sequential injection via my existing Microtech ECU. I will also be throwing the stock TPS in the bin and put a variable type TPS in its place.

And yes, there are other easier options for a crank angle sensor BUT I chose this because I think its the neatest plus I like to be a bit different than the norm. Really any late model pick up wheel is fine, you just need a 24 tooth wheel with reference pin to determine TDC.

    Cheers,
    Simon

    Simon,

With direct fire, I dont understand how the computer doesn't need to know where TDC is....

Doesn't the computer need to know NOT to fire at BDC?

Also, do you have some sort of igniter/diorect fire module to control spark rather then using the distributer cap and rotor? The photos on your page show each spark plug lead going into the dizzy, this couldn't of been the direct fire setup could it???

Top work simon! I like your thinking.

How does it pick up the home trigger? Have you machined off one of the teeth (Motronic trigger) ??

[EDIT] see below, I think I get it now

Just looked at your pictures again on the website, I think I can see the home reference point & pickup UNDER the top 24 tooth wheel

    Najje,
I haven't experimented fully with the microtech BUT I think all injectors fire at the same time so the ECU doesn't care about exact timing. The stock dizzy is used and is what gets the spark timing right.
Don't get mixed up between the injector firing (controlled by ECU) and spark firing (controlled by old dizzy at the moment)

My current set up has all leads going to the stock dizzy and coils. Once the crank angle sensor is in I can run independant coils and through out the old dizzy and coils.

    1JZ-rolla,
Yep the reference is under the 24 tooth wheel.

    Cheers,
    Simon

Simon could you tell me the complete height of the CAS? And would this work with a N/A engine?

Also what other parts did you need?

The total height from the head mounting face is 65mm. Its a bout a thin as it can be.

I haven't got it on my car yet as I'm also making a custom intake system. BUT so far I only used a stock 3T GTE dizzy and a stock 3S GTE dizzy, I also changed the main bearing while I had it apart.
I don;t have a pic yet but I have now also made a polished aluminium cover for it.

It will work on any engine that has a compatible ECU and a need for one coil per plug or sequential injection.

    Cheers,
    Simon

What do you mean by compatible?

I have a ecu that can either use a halleffect or a magnetic sensor. Is that what you mean?

Fish, it depends on your ecu, if it will read a multi tooth wheel or not, still proper crank trigger is better for what you want.
