Is it hard to polish an alternator?

If i do end up pulling it a apart i will more than likely take it to a polishing workshop rather than doing it myself .. I have a friend in the business and he owes me a few favours ... but he might take some time to polish it up... i just worried about putting it back together after a month or two... Hopefully i wont forget what went where..

its not that complicated.

LeeRoy, you can buy wire wheels in various sizes and thicknesses depending on what you want to do with them. an alternator is pritty much an alternator (i think) there are diffrent ampages but appart from that there isnt a hell of a lot of diffrences between them. im shoure it wouldnt be much off a task in addapting one from a 308 ect. and i think that was around 100 for a complete one, bare in mind that this is from mags that are over 10 years old so they would be more than 100 bucks i would imagine.

my 2c :

Acid dip the housing after disassembly - carby shops have great acid for alloys that leaves them with a schmick matte, slightly bronzed look.

Or, a 2$ tin of silver paint.

dunno about the acid dipping. my old man got his mani dont it came back real clean looking but not shiny. just depents on what finnish you are after.

As for the 308 alternator housings they wouldn't fit onto whatever toyota alternator housing he has. There would be a fair few different things. On the other hand he could buy a 308 alternator or whatever they are and wire it up and modify it so it fits but in the end it would be cheaper/easier/less PITA to just polish the one he has.

yep it would but what i said was, i thought that it was around 100 for a complete alternator with the guts in it reddy to run sort of thing. the wiring? at most it would be a plug. that would need to be changed.

anyway thats not the point, he has desided to pull it apart and get it polished.

btw Assailant while you have it apart you could get a quote to get it rebulit. i cant remember what it was in so i dont know how old it was... to lazy to go back threw this post. if you where to rebuild it the time whold be when you take it appart obviously.

bunnings wheels, Trojan (cheaper kit) about 3" the josco are about 1.5-2"

BTW I'd stay clear of wire brush drill attachments. that easily score aluminum and you dont wanna start over. Steel they may be ok tho.

Hmm... As for the look - I rather the polished look as I know it will match alot more things I have planned to polish up in the engine bay, eg rocker covers, thermo housing is polished already... bling bling ... and I guess I will get it rebuilt when I pull it apart I dpending how bad it looks inside.. how can you tell if it needs a rebuild burnt or rusty out wires? shit house bearings inside?

All of these and if it isn't creating decent current. An auto electrician will be able to test it and tell you.
