On the note of finding sponsors in the local area, having your own section of the club, etc etc. North QLD is a bit isolated, though there are 4 or more townsvillians who are part of the toymods forums. Apart from to gain access to the classifieds, etc., there doesnt seem to be too much incentive to become financial members of toymods. We already have our own small car club for older toyotas, and negotiations with businesses are underway for club discounts etc. Unfortunately, because townsville is so small, and the number of people who seem to be really interested in their toyota is a lot less than the number of people with nice/done up toyotas, organised track days, and other outings/meetings just arent viable at this stage. There is no way known that we could join up with a brisbane section, as brisbane is a full days drive from townsville, further from cairns. Too far to pop down for the weekend. Also, quite a few people I know that are into their toyotas are for some reason or another, without computer/internet access. This really makes it hard for us up here to justify becoming toymods financial members. The club we have hardly has any interest from the members, and there is no membership fees at all for it.
Just a gripe from a country town i guess.

That is the ONE and ONLY reason I did not renew my financial membership with toymods a few yrs back. From memory there was also a guy called Simon who was rather popular, with a corolla, that was constantly hassled by having the term "rice" thrown at him, and he left too....and a few other ppl ive forgotten names of.....and im sure theres more.....what do admins do about this ? well as u can see, the pointless arguements are never dealt with.
Back in the day, i really did appreciate the amount of knowledge on the forum.....and believe me its a ridiculous amount of knowledge. Yet it seemed as though the anti-social behaviour just got worse and worse, to the point where you couldnt read one thread without 50 ppl just having one huge bitch fest.
Toymods has to be the most unwelcoming forum ive ever visited for an inexperienced person to come, or even in general.

That webiste right there..... back in the day anyway (havent been there in ages)....combines a ridiculous amount of knowledge....yet with a friendly attitude........there were absolutely no "google search" responses...no sarcasm.....never heard a bad word
Admins also made sure that EVERYONE was ALWAYS polite to new people, no matter HOW nooby they were. They even dedicate a section FOR new people. Why ? Because that's what a forums is about, to learn from each other and to help each other out.
I understand the admins are doing this in their spare time......but so do alot of other admins on alot of other forums (im sorry but thats not an excuse).......
if their are "dodgy" ppl in the for sale section......do your job and moderate the forums.

Dont want to drag this thread too far off topic, but there seems to be two ways it can go. One way is that the admins/mods on a forum are called nazis for policing too much and 5% of the people on the forums have a whinge, and whinge louder than the 95% who are fine with it. But the flipside of this is that in real life the club/forum is quite sociable and really have a great time.Originally Posted by manipulate

Thats how 95% of the LARGE forums ive been on (and ive been on quite a few), and only a couple have managed to walk that fine line. The main factor in walking that fine line seems to be physical locality as well. The BIG forums (1000+ members) which have walked that line have had 99% of the members within the same locality, usually the same city.
Ive been a member of a lot of forums, and these are just my observations (a bit rambling though).
EDIT: For reference OCAU (Overclockers Australia), probably one of the biggest forums in Australia, has a 30 day time limit before you can even see the FS forums. Seems to work pretty well, but you will always get some people who will abuse it, that just seems to be life.

I'd like to reitterate that it's not preferable for people to create membership just so that they can sell stuff on the forums.
The classifieds section is a privilege bestowed upon club members and those that have earnt the right through their technical input.
We want the good people selling stuff and keeping the trash out. Just because there's a way around it for the trash (by paying for membership) doesn't mean that it's something that should be encouraged.

Further to this I'm actually registered on a couple of forums where I don't have the ability to post in for sale sections.
I'd have to contribute to the forums before I would be able to get the right to post.
This is fine with me as I can still view them, and still PM the sellers.
The main reason why people are bitching is because they had the ability to do it on the old forums, and now that that has been revoked, its time to complain.
Mani, looking at your profile on the old forums, you have been around for a long time, and used to post very regularly, but as of the start of the year, you faded away, and just came back to use the for sale section. This is fine as you have contributed more to the forums over the past few years than many people will ever do.
However, this year especially, we have had an extreme amount of people abusing the for sale section. I'd say probably a minimum of one person a week has signed up and tried to sell commercial items/quantities. If you are not on the forums daily, you don't see this, and hence its hard to see the reason why the forums have taken this approach.
Some time earlier this year, they began moderating the for sale sections, a couple of moderators pretty much dedicated their online time to scouring the for sale sections. This is pretty much no longer needed with the new system, which is a huge bonus.
Occasionally I'd check on the posts of people who have been selling lots of items, and you'd be surprised how many people that have had 90-100% of their posts in the for sale sections. This is not the kind of person that is wanted on the forums. There are many other avenues for them to use to sell items. Toymods just happens to be free and to a large specific audience.
Sure, this in turn has stopped the minority and ruined it for the majority, but you name one law on this planet that isn't there to stop the minority from ruining it for the majority.
The whole point of rules is to keep the minority in line.
Something to think about anyway.

i can understand the need to stop dodgey people advertising stuff in the classifieds, but surely we should still be able to place wanted ads! Theres not many other places to find parts so easily as the old forums?!
Mate - there are INTERSTATE members like myself who happens to be victorian - who HAPPILY fork over a few measily dollars to HELP the club run faciitys such as these ..
I get a few discounts - and a neato tshirt thrown in but im not expecting them to come down to melb to host a dyno day for the majority of the club either ..
I also provide some membership moolah to the toyota car club of queensland - and most likely will join up with the TCCAV ( victorian branch ) ..
that adequates to hmm - about 120 bucks a year .. not bad for the wealth of knowelege offwered from these sort of forums .. Its cheaper than an autospeed subscription and more to the point
its all about HELPING CLUBS GROW - toymods provides these functions for you for free .. have some respect for the facilitys offered - even if it isnt totally perfect for your needs , or whinge elsehwere..

I wasn't talking about you mate!Originally Posted by Classique71
Not only are you a club member and a constant sourse of information on alot of things, but your not bitching about not being able to do things.. I know that there is at least 1 victorian sponsor and it is not really that hard to set up others, or at least Find out if a business(?) is interested in becomming a sponsor and handing the harder work onto the moderators.
I think Most people on here think all the moderators have no family and an extended amount of time up their sleves to just sit and go through the forums 24/7, which is not the case at all.
People just need to lean alittle respect for others and not just think of themselves all the time.
Merry Christmas.

Fact of life...After Monday & Tuesday, even the calendar says W T F !!

I'll be paying for membership soon - not for the classifieds section but because I recently did an engine conversion and with the information on these boards I was able to learn more about my car, turbos etc...and I saved lots of money along the way.
Only problem I'm finding with the reputation thing is that some people (like myself) aren't very knowledgable about cars, Toyotas etc...and it will be hard to earn reputation points based on that fact.
Anyway, I've found that every post now is more thought out and as a whole - it's proved to become the very forum that the board was wanting to create...so well done guys and thank you.
I don't know that much about Toyotas, know a little bit about cars, but if in my opinion, you ask a new question that no one has before & could possible help out others as well who might be trying to find out the answer, then that's worth some rep in my opinion.
Kirsty - i know a few businesses that would be willing to help out the victorians ..
one very good one in particular - this is where i referred to witzl - he has the information supplied if you lot want to discuss it at the next board meeting ( which is one thing i wish i could attend but that distance thngs sucks arse )
Its the wookie factor that gets me fired up just as you pointed out - its a free service offered to the forum users ..
sort of like sugar packets at mcdonalds - they give those to you for free - but who's gunna bitch about if its CSR or homebrand sugar ?? Im sure someone will have a sook about, but all in all - they airn apying for it like the financial members do - and were happy with either.. Its still making out cups of coffee sweet regardless if its free or not and making US feel like we have something worth the effort to appreciate ..
hypothetical example i know but - a person who appreciates the service offered will come back , it works in every facit of business , or social behavior .. Some people will offer help , money or time to make that service better - and in our case - its the financial members, sponsors and toymods contributers *edit * putting the dollars up front to help support the facilitys , and the forum admin for running it ..
then we get compaints about it - then you think well - geez - how about a little bit of thanks - especially for the guys who run this service out of their free time after hours...
i bet not many directly approached the club at a meeting to say, or in an email who freely jump on this service - or the old one and say " thanks guys! - your doing an awesome job - if you need help with a hard drive - or a techie after hours , or a person who might know program X to make it better - gimme a yell "
Oh well - I just hope people realise theres more to toymods then just a little corner of the web , thats the side most users on here never see, nor want to see , and its by far the much much better thing ..
