For drift, any manufacturer will do, and fucking stiff.
Convert the front to coil overs.
I'm doing up a ma61 supra with a 1JZ installed, i've just ordered a set of KYB agx shocks with adjustable camber tops. The car will be driven on the track and hopefully entered into drifting competition's. I came out of a race prepped S13 so hard rides don't bother me.
Any help with selecting spring (manufacturer) and spring rate for back and rear would be fantastic
Regards
Jason

And what spring rate you calling stiff??
back and rear?
go 4 times stiffer than standard for a starting point
I was going to say something like 600-700lb/in, which is 3 times stiffen, but the above looks nice.

Same front and rear?
depends on the standard setuo and the way you want it to handle.
for example, AE86s have 100lb/in springs front and 110 lb/in rear. the suggested starting point is 6kg/mm front and 4kg/mm rear.
with the MA61, depending on the front rear weight distribution, i would go for something along the same ratio. front should pretty much always be harder on the front of a front engined front is heavier car.
what are the standard rates? call king and get the rates of their lows for the supra, then triple them.
Kings are around the 200 mark.

Another vote for coilovers. In addition to giving you access to a huge range of springs (there is very little available for the stock struts) it will also allow you to dial in much more camber. With the factory-style springs there is very little clearance inside the strut towers so your camber tops won't do much.
Buy a pair of Koni coilover sleeves from ImportBitz or similar, get them welded onto the factory strut tubes, buy some mega-stiff 65mm springs, and away you go.
As for the rear, converting to coilover is much harder to do as it's a trailing-arm IRS setup (no struts). You might want to consider getting some springs custom wound to suit the factory spring seats.
For spring rates, if you go the same front and rear (or maybe slightly less in the rear) you should have a pretty tail-happy setup - which I guess is what you want for drift, not not so much for circuit. You'd best decide what you're going to do with the car before you buy anything!

the different spring rate front to rear is generally about tire wear.
stiffness is defined by your shocks, not your springs.
springs rate affects range of movement.
in my sprinter when i bought it it has 5.3 kg.mm fronts and 4 ikg rears
now i have 8kg fronts and 6kg rears its ok.
go with low kings, adjustable rear swaybar and adjustable dampers. till you decide what would suit your driving better.
As already mentioned in this thread, Kings lows for MA61 = approx 200 lb/in. That will make a great drift setup.Originally Posted by rxbenny

If you like flopping around every time you get on and off the loud pedal. Least you'd have bulk negative camber to break traction![]()
