    Default 3tgte ECU and turbo

    Hey all,

I'm in the middle of making two decisions, just wanted any opinions or if anyone has had any expeience and can help.

i have a 3tgte in my '82 ta63 which is pretty much stock.

First thing is the turbo. From what i understand the ct20 isn't that good. i have a t3 garret which would require a rebuild. The t3 came off an RA60 with a 3tgte conversion and has custom made piping and intercooler. Should i get the t3 rebuilt or stick with the ct20 and get piping made up for an intercooler? Also what options are there for t3 rebuild? The other option is a friends has a t28BB that he might sell?

Second, looking for an ECU i only really want to spend between $1000-1200. i was thinking Haltech E6X or Micrtoech LT10. Is there a Power FC compatible with the 3tgte? Also, a friend wants to sell a Motec M4 pro (asking $1200) is that reasonably priced? i don't know much about ECU's and any help would be great?

    Thanx

Regarding the turbo, If you get an intercooler that is a decent size for the ct20, you can run up to 12 psi safely. If you want to go for another turbo later, (t3 etc), the intercooler is already there. The plumbing changes would be minimal. If you go for a t3 straight up you are going to have to outlay more money because you are going to have to rectify the problem of the turbo manifold. Whether you get a custom one, (made or buy second hand), or modify the existing manifold with a flange adapter.

A ct26 will fit your existing manifold with minor alterations which may be a better solution, and is similar in size to a t3. It may be a similar price or even cheaper than getting the t3 rebuilt, as a turbo rebuild kit is going to cost a bit plus labour.

The cheapest I found I could buy an E6x for was $1180. The cheapest I found a wolf3d v4 for was $1100. I'm not to familiar with the micro product. Remember if you can't install the ecu yourself you have to add labour for install and tuning as well.

Some good points made by Rob.

With the turbo you may save some money on piping provided you can get the manifold to sit close to it did in the other guys car but this saving would be useless when you would need to spend at least $500 for the turbo to be rebuilt.

I'm sure if you keep a look out you may be able to find a manifold up for sale and i think i've seen one on here or the old toymods site before. Even then you may need to get some piping modified if it doesnt fit properly which means a few more $$$

As for the computer the Haltech and Wolf 3d will both be more than capable of doing what you would be asking from them, but the thing to think about is also the additional tuning and wiring assuming you can't undertake those things yourself. You would also need to find a suitable person to do this.

As for the Motec they are good computers and offer a huge amount of support which cheaper computers lack. Should you be doing the wiring and tuning yourself i would suggest this as any problems you may have can be more easily solved due to the support offered.

Also if i were you i would ensure i had enough money to allow everything to be done and if you dont then save little by little to get everything done in stages. ie buy computer, then get turbo built, then get it wired and tuned. This way it will eliminate your cars downtime.

I forgot to mention i already have the manifold to suit the t3 as it was on the RA60. Also the ct20 has only done about 10,000kms. Rob where abouts did you find those prices for the haltech E6X and wolf3D v4? Just through internet searches there all up around $1500. i've put money aside for labour and tunning so thats not a prob. Budget for turbo rebuild was $900.

Just finished at easter time a E6X on my 3T, at trade through a mate it cost me about $1950 for computer, harness, sensors, 4 x coils (direct fire), 2 x dual igniters, TPS, O2 sensor. This is not to mention the new injectors, fuel pump, thermo fan, fuel pressure reg, furl hose, hose fitting, oil, filters, etc. extra $1000. Then if you need someone to wire it for you add another $500-700 (I wired it myself, $700 was a quote I got). Then add tuning of once again of between $500-700.
    So that exercise cost me,
    $1950 Computer +
    $1000 Extras +
    $700 Tuning
    $3650 Total
if you need someone to wire it and don't run direct fire then
    $700 Wiring +
    -$ 400 Not direct fire
    $3950 Total
Not trying to scare you, this is what it cost me at easter just gone and I did all the work myself except tuning it.
    RA40 3t-gte. Haltech fitted.
