the oil cooled turbo has no water in/out tubes
Jordan
This may be a stupid question but how can you tell if the ct20 is oil or water cooled if the turbo is not connected to the engine? I can post pics of the one I have if required.
Thanks
Dave

From that pic its definately oil cooled, but it also looks to be water cooled aswell like ct26's.
In that pic, just out of view I think I can see a stud for the water cooling line.. Is there also another two bolt flange on there?

Hi, Im enthused about corollas..
Yea thats why I was confused. To me it looks water cooled and oil cooled. I thought the ct20's came out as either water or oil cooled, not both. Is this normal?

you would either have oil only or oil & water.
These things NEED oil.
I dont now much about ct20's or 3T motors, but i found this:
Toyota unfortunately has never published the compressor maps for its turbos. The CT20, as you can see was the first Toyota turbo, and is far from perfect. It has relatively restrictive turbine housing even for the stock horsepower levels of its applications. Lag is also considerable. Maximum flow is enough for about 210hp. Also, it is reported to fail around 100000km no matter how religiously you cool-down after driving and use best oils possible. Insulating the oil lines with thermal wrap and installing an oil temperature meter and if necessary oil cooler would be a good idea to prolong its lifespan.
SOME CT20's have water cooled bearing housings, and some don't. non-water cooled water cooled early 3T-GTEU (82,83,?) 1C-T
2C-T (until 86)
2L-T (until 86)
late 3T-GTEU (?,85)
22R-TE
presumably all post-86 applications
CT20 has slightly worse lag than a Garrett T03 with 0.63 A/R and 45-trim compressor. However, the Garrett poses a much smaller restriction to the exhaust due to 40% larger turbine inlet. Also, this Garrett compressor has a maximum intake air flow for about 240hp.

Hi, Im enthused about corollas..
So I will take it this is a turbo from the later model 3tgte's.you would either have oil only or oil & water.
These things NEED oil.
Thanks for your help guys.

isn't that just a oil cooled one, in and out pipe for the oil? i think the pipes join right next to each other use the same gasket?

oil is generally a two bolt flange with two holes between the studs (feed and return)
whereas the water lines are actually pipes where the rubber water pipes slide onto the metal lines (turbo side) and you whack a hose clamp on em.
Dave, that big metal ribbed pipe that you've got a rag stuffed into is your oil return, by the looks of it, that other hard line (on pic, on top of turbo) is your feed.
the two metal nipples on the bottom side of the turbo, that "aust162" was referring to, are your wastegate lines, the supply for your wastegate actuator so it knows when to open, the line joining the two nipples is where you'd stick a boost controller/solonoid.

ah, okie, thats a stude to bolt the exhaust heat shield on.

also that big long feed line connects to the thermostat by a banjo bolt. Good luck finding washers for it took me a long time![]()

the corrugated oil drain pipe indicates its a pre 90 unit. all the later 4cyl ones have a rubber like drain hose that goes to the sump. there are various types of high pressure oil feed pipes and water colling pipes.
