the american luxes came out generally with each engine one generation ahead.
My Hilux is American import 1981 RN 34 and it has the 22R as original
obscure.. thats way before australia got them

Ive had it for about 15 years . A Yank brought it with him when he came out here. He decided to go back so I got hold of it pretty cheap ( nobody wanted LHD ). Got original papers and full workshop manual with it. Now done around 130000 miles and motor getting knackered . Have just got hold of a couple of 18RGEUs and will drop one of these into it with a W55 ( still has original 4 speed in it ) . Hopefully this will liven it up a bit and still keep it old school ! .
Well i cant see it to difficult but every conversion is difficult.I used to work on a 81-82 Hiace van years ago which had a 308 Holden V8 very tight fit but a fairly good conversion as i can recall there was never any probs with overheating or heat transfer.I can also recall getting around was a 70's model Hiace with a 250 Falcon motor also.So anything is possible it just takes time,money and abit of work for it to work.

so anythings possible. Surely if the 350 fits, a 1UZ may too?

I've done a number of Hi Aces in the past from 305 chevs into a 92 model, l26 nissan into a 71 model, 202 holden into too many types from 71 -85 models, all gets back to measuring it up and having a go. Also saw a 350 z v6 twin turbo put into a 92 hi Lux, but that was alot of work.

For those that recon a 7M won't fit into a Hiace because of height or whatever.

During the late 90s, I checked out & got a ride in a late 80's Hiace van with a 7M-GE in it.
I'm not quite sure what they did with engine mounts & other stuff because I didn't know much about anything other that 80s Subarus at the time.
But
It was sitting vertically
did a 13s quarter
They had tried a 7M-GTE, but it got too hot in 2 ways: under the bum & for the motor.
They couldn't get enough cooling to it via the under floor tunnel from the front.
I've always for some perverted reason wanted to put something decent under the first of the Taragos that had the driver behind the front wheels, but I think their engines are laid on their side.
If you get a van, if you get just a cargo one without the rear seats, you could always cut the floor open & make your own new engine bay with a new cover (always wanted to do that to the van version of the old Mini.
I owned an L powered Long wheelbase Hiace and from what I can remember the engine bay was reasonably tight, but still enough height for OHC engines and another spare foot in front of the 4 cyl before the floor pan dropped down to fit 6 cylinders.
