Default 1G aftermarket temp guage install.

I have decided to put an aftermarket temp guage on my 1G, a digital one.

Which plug on the 1G do I use to place the probe in, as I can see two under my thermostat housing both with two wires coming out of them I think the top one is green and the other has a bit of grease on it so and I have not cleaned it off to see the colour yet.

Do I use one of those plugs or is there one I have missed?

Do I need to get a certain type of aftermarket plug to fit in a 1G?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, any warnings or things to consider that people have found out through trial and error etc.... ?

I am told the kits are about $30.

    Thanks in advance.

when i removed the standard probe from mine. . . i had some problems - in that the ECU doesnt know coolant temperatures. . and hence runs the wrong mixtures once the car heats up. . . .

the ECU relies on the coolant temperature to the set the cold start mixtures, timing and whatever else needs adjusting for cold start.

Try it yourself and see. . . im pretty sure the top one (closest to the thermostat housing) is the correct one. uhh btw once u unscrew the std probe. . .ur gonna get coolant coming out so dont forget to at least partially empty the cooling system b4 u give it a shot

Is their a way of keeping that stock probe and using a digital one as well, a location to place it could be a problem I guess?
I was told digital ones were better than the analog ones you can just stick in your radiator pipe.

    digital ones?
both are limited by the actual sensor.

you should not disable your ECU's temp sensor..... that's just dumb

see if there are any spare spots for senders.. and if not, perhaps you could get another thermostat housing and get a fitting TIG'd on, that you can then screw the sender into.

most accurate would be a "precision temp sensor" like LM35 or LM335 transistor looking thing,. but most people aren't that worried.

what do you mean by digital??

is the 1G thermostat housing specific to the 1G. . . or is there another motor with teh same thermostat housing? Coz i plan on tapping another thermostat housing and just stickin the sender in there. . .since there isnt anywhere else to stick a sender

I was told that their were analog and digital, refering to the sender units for the temp guage and that the digital based ones were more accurate
    Thats all.

I don't need a top of the line one just a reliable one that does the job, I guess I should buy one first then I will know what size the sender is and go from there.

ummm.. nope.. digital means step by step... all senders are analogue as far as i know...

    ie a temperature dependent resistor...

get a VDO or similar... can be cheap. fairly quick response and accurate enough.

don't bother with autometer or that kind of thing... and don't get sucked in by the "autogauge" ones
    and don't go k-mart quality

you can get VDO off ebay for maybe $30?

I have an aftermarket analog gauge on my 1ggte but would be same principle as digital. The way I figured out which sender to remove was to simply 1 by 1 unplug the sensors around the thermostat area until the gauge in the dash stopped working. The one that you will be removing does not have anything to do with the computer only the dash display so there will be no issues with fault codes or crap like that.

The one you want is on the front side of the thermostat area near the cam wheel cover. A total asshole of a position. I had to remove the radiator to fit the probe.

Ok thanks for that Pube, man would you care to explain your name sounds dirty.

I will have a look for that other sender I could always see the two down the side but wondered where the third one was, as I was told the one I needed to use had only one wire coming out of it as the other two have two. Mine was hooked up to the dash but then stopped working so I might as well hook up a new probe as I don't know why it died on me. Sick of having no temp guage now.

Do I need to get a sender that is a certain size or do you get a few different sized plugs with the kit?

    Thanks

you can get adaptors from various places...

perhaps they meant digital gauge as in the DEFI ones?
    they still have analog senders...

Yeah I am not sure the fella I was talking to just said the digital ones were more accurate and reliable, I don't think he meant the actual layout of the guage but the sender.
I really don't know enough about it though to be sure

I will checkout the local parts place and see what they can offer me, for a reasonable price. They should be able to recommend something reliable.

VDO (ebay) Pricol (said to be similar to VDO, but cheaper version) Speco look ok, but dunno about accuracy... saty away from cheap autometer and other too cheap gauges...

a gauge that is out by 10-20deg is worse than not having one

i found my VDO's (manufactured in the early 70's) where prettyaccurate (within a few degrees) when comared to thermocouple and precision temp sensors... not bad for 30 year old gauges (NIB tho )

Ok I will be comparing a few at a store soon. I looked on ebay for some but could only find either shitty stuff or expensive stuff

Myne is just a cheapo 2" speco and it does the job. The adapters it had (i think it had adapters) it screwed straight in no probs there. However the make things difficult, there is no break in the line from the sender to the gauge. This poses a problem as the senders location is in a prick of a spot where you can hardly get an open end spanner onto it! It took me a few hours to get a few turns on it! Id say go an electrical sender as it would be hell of alot easier to install as yuou could disconnect the wire(much like the stocker) so you could get a socket onto it. For all the trouble my cheapo speco cost me, I would have paid $100 extra to get an electrical sender if I knew it would be easier.

i have brought in from taiwan digital temp gauge units

these are small black units look like turbo timers
they have a digital readout for water temp and oil temp(if u buy soare sender for oil)
and they have a thermofan trigger too

so they tell u actual water temp in a digital number and then u can program and temp for the thermo to turn on
so if anyoen wants one pm me
